I would like to know of there is anyone that's familiar with turning up an injector pump on 1996-97 cummings pickup? My dad refuses to upgrade and the added power would be great for heavy loads. I don't want to mess with it due to flashbacks I have of blowing up my 6.9 ford.

If you haven't already done it. Before you turn anything up, open up the exhaust, either pull the muffler, or install a 4" high flow system, and go order a Baldwin PA2820 air filter.   You gotta let them breathe, before you start dumping the fuel.

industrial injection, ats diesel or any them other diesel tuning places may be a good place to start asking them question, but they would rather sell u a new p-pump. there is a place in waco tx that will turn them up for $1 a hp. i will have to get the name of it and repost, but im sure if your close enough to waco and wanna google diesel injection or repair shops, you could find the shop. if then p-pumps are like a 3406b cat engine, u can pull the peanut cover off, take the injection pump main gear nut off and advance it a couple teeth and keep doing it till you get to your hp rating you want.

It is not nearly as complicated as a cat. There are a couple of different ways to do it. Slide the plate or replace it. Like was said before, help it breathe before you add fuel!

for sure the cumminsforum.com is the place just look for your year modle and follow the instructions. I just did a 12 v and used this forum daily Grin 12v is super easy. to add fuel slide the afc full forward and pull the plate that is under the afc housing. the afc is the turtle shell looking deal at the top rear of the injector pump that is held on by four screws. you can mod the afc allot to get the most fuel out of a factory injector pump but like chris said you have to have air... modding the afc will swamp your factory turbo and cause allot of black smoke with not too much extra power. the diesel tuning world is allot like hog dogging in the scince that we try to do our thing without drawing unwanted attention to the sport. SO I will tell you this DONT tune the truck to roll smoke like a train... that only waste fuel and gets the global warming gurus all fired up, The way a diesel motor makes the most power is with a light smoky haze at full throttle not black smoke. so if its black smoking you are not cool just wasting fuel. its about like posting a cut up dog and thinking that is cool.......read up on the cumminsforum.com... i will jump off my soap box now. Grin

I still roll the coal on an as needed basis. If I turn on my blinker and they nail the gas to keep me from getting over, I'll just smoke them out. I'm not talking a little smoke either, more like a locomotive under full load.  Now, I do try to drive conservative and not piss everyone off, but I am sure glad to have the smoke screen when I need it.

true that... i dont always practice what i preach Grin i love catching them rice burners tailgating me with the window down. a little smoke screen will cause them to back off and a little more will keep them from getting your license plate number Grin

X's 2, especially when the hood rats pull up next to me with their windows down and radio turned up so loud that i can hear it with my windows up......sure fire way to get it from me!

Thanks for all the advice guys that is what i needed. If it's not too difficult I will read up on doing it cause we have 3 to do. I might have to pm a few of you with specifics though.

First thing you need to do in this order is update the lift pump to a fass or airdog, then get your stock injectors replaced with new higher horsepower ones designed for your goals, you can take your old ones in for rebuild or cores and save some money, then get all of the stock exhaust off of it and the cat and go to 5 inch back with flo pro muffler, get a aftermarket air cleaner of some kind, last thing i would do is fool with th einjection pump first, injecotors, a pipe, air cleaner might be all you need and the fass fuel pump.  How many miles on the motor and have the injectors ever been replaced??

All stock on all of them. 2 standards and one is auto. Standards I think have 80k and 140k don't know about the auto truck never drive it. Apparently I need to do my research. About the bellowing black smoke, that is far from my goal. These spend most of their time hooked to trailers. Don't want to get crazy with hp numbers but, 80-100 rwhp would be great.

Easy up grade to gain power is a cold air intake. And take the ring out of the turbo but on them 12v turning up is easy. Take the plate on the side of the injector pump and wouldn't turn it more than an 1/8 of a turn. Till you run it for a bit. But I would invest in an airdog external lift pump. I have a 3 stage adjustable on my 01. It's a life saver.

if you see black smoke or any smoke out the tail pipe you are not getiing complete combustion so wasting fuel...need to open up on the intake air and exhaust like previously stated...unless it is blue smoke from leaking oil. I wonder how much extra horsepower we would get with 100% combustion and fuel economy. The engine, transmission, rearend...something would probably give.

the stock lift pump on the 95-97 12v will support 500 horse power... no need to get an air dog of fas pump unless you just want to drop coins. the pump mods I am talking about will easily give you the 80-100 horsepower gain you want. but might get smokey. everything you need to mess with is on or in the afc housing. get to tweakin

Taking out ring in Turbo ain't giving u no more power there endless amounts to do to ur trucks. But me personaly. I'd be more worked bout the auto and ur clutch in manual I always through plate in trash and ground down afc arm. But that probably a lot more low end fuel than u want. Sliding plate all the way and putting on an hx40 is the old school way with those before it all got big it all depends on wat ur wanting
