Need Help: Looking for a particular type of dog.......

I haven't been on the board much lately, haven't even been hunting much. Seems all I do is work anymore. I keep waiting for it to cool off. Here it is December and its still pushing 80 degrees. Me and a couple guys did go hunting last week for three days on one of the public land hunts. Bayed a couple, caught a couple little pigs, and got outrun too! Also wore my dogs out......

Those of you who know me, or have read my posts, know my dog Monkey. He is 6 1/2 years old and my Spur dog is 5 years old. They have been cut up several times and overheated a couple times too. That, and being out of shape, really showed on this hunt. Monkey bayed a hog and it broke before Spur got to him. We lost both of them off the Garmin at 1.3 miles....and quick. Had to get the truck and drive about a mile towards them to pick them back up. By then they were hot and had either got outrun or ran out of gas.  After that they were done for. They were real hot and had no energy left.

One of the guys I know was hunting in there and had a Plott hound. We put him out on a track and he ran for about 2 hours. We saw the hog cross a road but the Plott never stopped him. He is open mouthed. But, after 2 hours of running, barking the whole way, when we caught him and loaded him he wasn't even panting.....at all. And he doesn't get hunted much more than my dogs.


What I am getting at is even though I like my dogs I know that they are NOT as heat tolerant as I would like, nor as long winded. I don't want a dog that will run 5-6 hours after a hog but I would like one that after a hour or so run still has gas in its tank.  It seems my dogs are sprinters and do well on short runs but after a long run in warm weather, they are shot for a couple days. Also, the older I get the less walking I want to do . I used to like walk hunting the dogs, but I don't want to have to walk all day either.

The question I would like to ask is: does anyone know a breeder who has cur dogs that fit the following description: Heat tolerant, good noses, quick and athletic, about 45-55 lbs, bay (not catchy) and will range out looking for a hog better than 1,000 yards regularly. And they MUST be 100% silent on track. I don't care what color the dog is ......as long as its red or yellow....

Just curious as to what responses I may get. I am pretty picky when it comes to dogs and after almost 30 years raising these dogs of mine  I am looking "outside the box". If there is someone who has dogs that fit the bill, I would like to talk to them.

Everyone is good here. The kids are  growing like weeds. Well have tons of rats thanks to you.lol I think rowdy is ready for another visit to come see you. He wants a snake and I drew,the line. But he sure liked it at your house. I put him in football to try and make sure we don't push the cowboy stuff on him to hard and he was the only kid on the team,roping and tieing all the other kids. I think its bread into him to just cowboy.lol

I have a pup bout 10 months that should end up fairly long winded but is just barely started she is half catahoula and half greyhound she has tracked on one staged hunt and was silent and winded once when a group ran in front of the truck. And she barked outside of the pen. But that is all ive messed with her let me know if your interested. Good luck

Josh I appreciate the offer but  am looking for more of a proven line of cur dogs. One that is know to produce the type of dog I am looking for consistently.

Chance, you have a great family, one you should be very proud of. Crystal is great, the kids are super kids, you are very fortunate indeed. I enjoyed you and Rowdy coming down and we will have to do it again. I know its a looonnggg way but you are welcome here anytime. After deer season is over here, maybe I can get you to come down. Dave picked up another place for hog control but we can't hunt it until after deer season. Its about 3,200 acres and he says it has quite a few hogs on it....... and hasn't been dogged in several years.

I will let you know if it looks like that may work out. Not 100 % sure if they are going to let us dog it or just let Dave trap it.

Tell Rowdy I have a couple more rat snakes and a couple more king snakes now.......a buddy brought me more from Ga. Just what I needed!

I was talking with Mark, CajunL, and Dave.  I had to relieve myself, so I stepped behind the trucks.  As I was finishing up, I heard some whispering.  I slowly eased around the back of Mark's truck to see him whispering to Monkey.  I heard him say, "I love you boy, but I really wish you were open on track.  At this point in my life, it is so nice to just sit in the truck and listen to a good dog work.  Once bayed, I could send Dave in to catch the hog with you." .  As I walked back to the others, I could not help but grin.

I have sold a few of my american leopard curs to a few hog hunters and they seem to love'm. They may be a little mouthy for you though.  I like'm more than a hound because of their brains, energy, grit, nose, feet and they want to please their owners. Look at hometown hog doggers vid on youtube. He has a black and tan leopard cur that came out of my kennel. Like I say he may be a little mouthy, but they love the dog crap out of him. Here is a picture of his sister and a couple of my leopards. I have a female that should have pups in feb and I'll breed a female in june or so. I really like leopards. I use them for coon hunt'n, but they are used all over the country for hogs, bear, lion, and cat.

Now Josh, I know for a fact you couldn't get that close to my truck if Monkey was in it, so that didn't happen! 

And as far as me and hounds, I love to hear them run if they have a pretty mouth but "been there done that" and won't go back. I don't want a track straddling, track barking dogs to run hogs out of the county....most of these hogs run that way with a silent dog behind them anymore.

Don't get me wrong guys, I like the dogs I have, but at times, I wish I had a little more range and a little more lung capacity in my dogs. It sucks to have a 3 day hunt and after the first day your dogs have about gassed out. On the other hand, I can take my dogs and hunt smaller places that you can't hunt with a rangier dog.

Not sure what the answer is, but I am going to try something different maybe, and see how it works out. But it WON'T be a hound! Especially NOT a BLUE one.....

Big Chris, I have owned and hunted Plotts in the past. The ones I had were semi-silent but that was 25 years ago. These days there are way more hog hunters and way more educated hogs. Before you could bay a hog with about any dog. Now they all want to run and you need either a dog with bite to stop them, or a dog with a lot of bottom to run one for hours to stop him.

With hunting places getting smaller and smaller, I don't have the places to run one for 5-6 hours and still be where I am legally supposed to be. So I tried to breed out some of the catch in my dogs, but keep enough bite to whoa one up. My old dogs (15-20 years ago) would bark 1-2 times then catch about any hog. Put 2-3 dogs on the ground and it was caught no matter how big it was, and lots of times the dogs paid the price for that. So I tried to breed a dog with emough bite to stop a hog, then back up and bay. My old Dixie dog was about as perfect a dog for me, as I have ever seen. Problem was, she got old on me......and due to cancer, I never got a pup from her.

But my dogs are cow bred and they just don't get out more than about 250-300 yards when hunting. Thats fine on a small place, but I hunt one place thats 24,000 during deer season and thats a LOT of walking in 300 yard loops........plus, the dogs are wore out by the time you get on a hog.


So I am looking for a dog with a little more range and a little more lung capacity. Not like a hound that will run for days, but more than what I currently have. Real fine line there between enough and too much lung capacity, bottom or whatever you want to call it. At least for me.

Mark even wanted to drive incognito in his "other truck" to save the embarrassment of being recognised as a hound and leapord dog hunter! LOL

I have a friend here in California that has been breeding his own dogs for 15 or so years they r plot /mt cur/pit they r silent on track and real gritty he uses them on Hogs and bear they will hunt all day and night he has 2 well started dogs a little over a year he is selling he has to many dogs right now and needs 2 cut down they r definitely not culls if u r interested call me 209-620-6291
