I have noticed over the years that dark moonless nights produce less hogs than brighter nights...

We had a yellow dog named Chubby that hunted far better during the day than at night, we used to joke that he needed a flash light as he wasn't going too far from the truck if it was dark but he would hunt all day long with no hitch. I agree with DJ, we try to take our puppies as much as possible at night and you can tell they are not as confident in the dark as they are in the day light until they become accustomed. DJ

I do both, it just kind of depends on what time of year. In the summer I tend to hunt late nights to keep the dogs out of the heat and during deer season I hunt nights also. The rest of the year just kind of depends on my schedule. My dogs could care less night or day.

i prefer a morning hunt myself, like others i wanna see whats going on...but hunting is hunting to me day or night.
This is a good topic and i have a question myself...
I've heard of dogs not hunting well at night never believed it until i got a younger cur that does not hunt out hardly at all during the night. During the day he's gone...
anyone else have this problem?
ower dogs (me and my buddys) seem to hunt better at night then during the day

It is a rare occasion for me to hunt at nite. I hunted at night most of the time when I was younger, guess it was good, I could have been in a whole lot worse places. It is so much easier to watch the dogs during the day, and sure seem to not get as many cut up. It is sure enough easier to go talk to someone about going to go get your dogs if they get on the wrong place during the day time, I have had do look down the barrel of a gun on several occasions, when going to knock on a door after dark!

Do you think this why in general people catch less at night?? I agree on wanting to go during the day, we hardly ever hunt at night unless an afternoon hunt runs over!!! Not saying you don't catch hogs at night but certainly we feel like we RUN hogs at night... and CATCH them during the day

The dogs exibit more confidence and less caution on bright nights or daytime...

I be dang . I figured I would get swamped with nite hunters but there seems to be more day hunters , that kinda shocked me . I just like being able to see my dogs watch the bays . I have only been nite hunting hogs one time and that was nuff for me and my dogs. They was not sure what to do but in the end did range on out but I like to went down a 40 cliff straight into the river with my wife on the back of the wheeler didnt see the crevus are hole and it started caving off and I just shot the juice to that big brute force and just happen to have it in four wheel drive and it jump clean out of the hole needless to say I had to change my pants and put a ice pack on my head after my wife got finished beating on it haahhahahaha first time and last time.

Me and my friends down south go round and round about this... obviously, hogs move more at night(usually)... and therefore, you have a better chance of seeing, or at least getting on fresh sign at night... which is a good reason to hunt at night...
My experience Tony, is that indeed, I tend to run more hogs at night than catch them(talking about heavy woods now... in open spots it's still a done deal dark or daylight)... but I have not had the opportunity to "force" my dogs to learn how to deal with it yet... I just can't hunt at night on most of my spots...
Those that I respect assure me that if I were to continue to make my dogs hunt at night, they would firgure it out and become better dogs for it... coming from them, I believe it... just not had the chance yet to prove it for myself.
I'm hoping to go down and hunt with them here in the next few wks... don't even care if I take any dogs, I just want to watch and learn how they hunt the heavy palmetto at night... defenitely an art to it...

I used to never hunt nights, but with use of the gps it's not so bad I guess. I'm terrible about getting turned around...heck I can turn the lights off and get lost in my house. Been really lost a few times and that was enough for me.
I still prefer hunting early mornings, but certain times of the year seem I do more night hunting now days.

I have only been hog hunting for about a year, and finally went on my first night hunt two weeks ago. Even though we didnt get on any hogs that night, I gotta say it was the most enjoyable hunt I have been on yet. We were riding horses, through the hills, with clear skies and a full moon, and it was a blast. Was bright enough outside I rarely even used my headlamp. I am sure my opinion might change with some more experience, but for now, I am looking forward to some more night hunts. This was also my two pups first hunt, day or night, and they did a great job running step for step with the big dogs. My thinking is if I can get them accustomed to night hunting, then daytime hunting might come easier for them.
Another interesting thing is all the guys I was running with were using P&P cut gear, and my two dogs had the wild boar collars(with borrowed P&P vests) on with the reflective strips, and everyone commented on how they liked the reflective collars on my dogs.

You'll have to give me a few pointers when you figure it out. I'm less "art" more crashing and falling.
