Got a new hairy dog last week and took her on her first hunt in the wild west. Sugar is her name, she is by the RIP dog from ozz and out of a 3/4 Dogo, 1/4 AB female. Donny came down and brought Dustin, I loaded Smoke and Griz, with Curly and Sugar to catch, Donny had Rose and Sam, Dustin had a new finished dog and a couple of pups, so we were fixed up pretty good for the runners we have been running into out in the shin oak.

We cast and roaded some dogs around a wheat circle and had a few barks on a running sounder that they could not shut down. It got dark and we picked up the land owner who had a couple of deer hunters on the south side of the ranch, he was happy I came and got him for a dog hunt. We got the wind right and put all the dogs down and went to roading. Not having much luck but after two miles we came up down wind of a windmill and Smoke and Rose rolled out hard. We kept driving untill we heard a bay about a mile further east. The other dogs got in the race and were holding a big running boar that I think I have run two other times.

I hit the gas and got to with in 300 yds of a moving fighting bay and kicked Curly and Sugar to them. Dustin and I headed to them at a run. The boar made a stand in a thick oak mott and we could hear when Curly and Sugar hit. Lots of oak brush cracking before I could tell they were caught and they made that big boy squeal.

The boar spun and came to me dragging quite a bit of weight, but Dustin got a leg at just the right time and I got him stuck. Land owner had a great time and just a few small cuts to the dogs. I broke the steering coupler on the old Dodge on the way out, but Donny and I fixed it with some bailing wire and I had to drive home alone for some reason  Wink

Good hunt with some great folks and perfect weather.

Thanks,
Paul T

Thats Smoke on the left ear and Griz on the neck "helping" the hairy dogs

Good looking sugar dog - looks a little bigger than Curly?  30" at the shoulder?  Can't wait to see her work - Baldy is doing great even 2 states away.

I have had a couple of the hairy dogs over the years and they worked out well.  Airedale x Pitt, big strong athletic dogs, fast, and fearless.  They had some nose, hunted well alone or with others, lots of drive.  I don't see that cross very often.
