Well my ole Blu gyp turned nine years old this year and even tho she is still in great hunting shape I think I am going to retire her from the hunting life to the brood life.  This old dog and me along with several buddies have been in many battle together she has been cut more times than I can count and I have sewed her up even more with never a whimper.  She is by far the best cur dog I have ever seen on a big big bad boar hog she has been on some trophys thats for sure . Not many has gotten away when she was on the ground.  Nine years old is a long time for one to have done what she has done ruff as any and smart as a whip.  Anyway gonna do this hunting year with out her its damn near like loosing a child ,  I dont know if I will be able to do it with her screaming every time I load up but I am going to try.  I will be breeding her this year and keeping them all looking for the next Ole Blu.

Old Blu....Might be some as good but there damn sure aint none no better!

Sounds like a good dog brother, love to hear more about her.  You ever tried to breed her before?  What you gonna breed her to?

She has been bred three times twice to the same male once to another .  I didnt want no body haveing any of that stuff so I kept a female out of one and a female out of the other thats it. I did breed her last year to a really good dog of a friend of mine but something went wrong and we lost all three pups we have not figured out what it was yet.  I have a dog out here my Horn dog my main find dog who is out of old Blue's half sister Little Ann both bitches out of a dog named Joe. Ole Blue twice from Joe anyway Gonna breed Blue to him soon as she comes in .  The pups will be like heavy heavy heavy Joe blood and the out on my Horn dog is pure Plott from a Plott dog I owned it is straight Sizzlin Heat / Alabama Hammer that stuff works with my line of dogs great.  So pups should be like Heavy Heavy Joe Blood and 1/4 Pure Plott.  I also have a grandaughter of Ole Blu out here Hannah Montanna that is out of Little Ann's liter brother the C.O. dog  as I said Little Ann is off Joe and is a liter brother to C.O. and C.O. was bred to a daughter of my ole Blu gyp as far as the way Ole Blues daughter Hannah Montanna works a hog she is the splitting image of her grand mother I am gonna take Hannah Montanna and breed to my Horn dog also that puts two half sisters Little Ann and Ole Blue both as grandmothers thats 1/2 the other 1/4 is more Joe blood and the out cross on them will be 1/4 Pure Plott again Sizzlin Heat / Alabama Hammer.  Been playing around cause I have had no really need to breed but fixing to get real serious with this blood cause my dogs are getting old .

Hunter to hunter, why would you be worried about that blood getting spread all over creation should you sell the litter?

I have my opinions, just like to hear yours  Grin

Well I was brought up learning to breed dogs from the old School.  I learned to breed dogs from top notch dog men .  I was lucky !!!!!!!!!!!!!  When I started out with dogs not necessarily cur dogs I was introduced to breeding by what I guess you would call a legends in their day and they had strict ways.  The dogs they bred back in the day were dogs they used themselves not sold.   Back in the day bloodlines were cherished not Whored out as they are in todays time.  Many of the great bloodlines you see today were at one time cherished as such by such men,  that is why you still have great dogs today from some bloodlines of dogs the heritages those old men cherished and kept to themselves.  They worked their dogs they culled there dogs and they bred their dogs accord lying .  As time went on some of these cherished lines got out and other people benefited from their hard work and as time has went on further some of those lines got out and even more benefited .  Then as time went on some of these lines fell into the hands of people that did not Cherish these bloodlines as much as the old men did back in the day and they found out they could sell dogs for profit and some for big big profit and so there goes the commercial bloodlines of today .  The more commercial a bloodline becomes the higher and higher the  percentage of culls  you will see.  Sure you will say but man they still produce some great dogs well I say to you just look at how many people are breeding these dogs and it becomes pure numbers of dogs  well then sure you are still gonna have some great dogs but how many breedings did it take to get these great dogs I can tell you way way more than it took the old school men back in the day that cherished there dogs and did it right !!!!!!!!!  In other words the lines, the breeds become Polluted.

Just think were some of these breeds of dogs would be today if the old men of the old school were still alive and have bred them themselves to this day !

I breed my dogs to use myself not to whore out to every Tom, Dick and Harry !
This is not to say I don't let some out here and there but when I do it is to someone I turst and know other than that not many of the dogs I use get out .

Just the Ole School way man .  Hope ya ll don't take this the wrong way are think I am bragging about this are that cause Am sure there are some dogs out there that will put that boot in my dogs ass but do I get mad hell no man I am taking notes !

Couldnt agree with you more.  I had an unplanned litter out of my gyp (dont know her exact breeding) and my male bulldog.  Gave every dang one of them away to friends, kept one and am kickin myself in the butt.  Every one of them so far will bay the hair off a hog, and a few have found their own.  And they are 7 months..   Shoulda kept the whole dang litter (all males), but now at least i know where to get some of this blood if my male dont make it, oh the bulldog was neutered.. Apparently a day late..

Guess what im tryin to say is, its apparent you did your homework on your blood and cherish it and im sure youve got a friend or two that think the way you do, so wouldnt it be a good idea to place a pup or two with them?  That way you have more opportunities to breed back to your blood should somethin happen?  Just my .02 but sounds to me like you dont need it...  Wink Grin

I totally understand how yur feeling. my old male is 9yrs also. he can still get the job done anyday of the week, but I can tell he is slowing down. makes me sad, even tho we have had lots of good times & plenty of hogs.  I have 3 of his sons, they are 2yrs old now.  one of them has been outdoing him.  I cant bear to watch him just sit at home, so I alternate him and his boys.  old dogs one hunt, young the next.  & I am  gonna breed him again in this next year as soon as my gyp comes in.

good luck w/ yur breedings & enjoy the time u have left w/ her. for a gritty hog dog, 9yrs of life is an accomplishment.   shes a nice lookin dog.   Smiley

My hats off to ya Jimmy. Hope you get some pups off her. I agree on the polluted bloodlines out there. It's tough to keep my mouth shut sometimes when the young felles get to talking dogs but unless you saw it you can't understand it. Best of luck with the young dogs.

Very few left .  I just got off the phone with one of a few that has been breeding dogs since the middle to late 50's.

I'm not a very old dog hunter but both my grandpas have told me the way things used to be and I have respect for the old dog men who used their to make a living. They both have passed on so I can't ask them this question.
What do you think are the biggest contributing factors to the decline of dog lines besides money? Obviously most people dog hunt more for recreation now than to survive so I think that plays a part in people not culling as hard ( a dry run doesn't mean you go hungry nowadays ). But did the stock laws or fence laws and private property enforcement play a big roll in these old dog men disappearing. Hunting with dogs was a way of life for thousands of years and now it seems to be a dieting art.

JMO..... Well times has changed drastically!!!!!!!!!! People have changed !!!!  Noting and I mean noting is any were near the same as the 60's are 70's when I was growing up grade school and High School.  The best generation of men and women I think were the generation before me from the 1900's to 1950's.  These people went threw hell and knew what hard times were hard working core values great work ethics a day were a hand shake meant something.    These days are the age of Technology you want some thing you just click a button.  The day of the INTERNET everything is commercialized.  To many people man this world is over populated its like mice breeding mice.  I can even see the change in my kids even tho they were brought up the hard  way as I was the times have changed and I can see the new age in them its noting I did are my wife its just how the generations change from generation to generation .  Land is short  and getting shorter a dollar is worth noting jobs are hell to find.  Everything is way over priced and noting means noting these days.  The Government is a wreck and the USA is not the Super Power it once was.   The people that have jobs have to work 60 hours a week just to make it so no time is involved in all of this .  The main thing is it has become a commercial kinda sport and not a way of life as it was in times before me  .  Man I don't know .

Does anybody know why they call this Generation of people Generation X Huh?Huh?Huh?

Jimmy, you are right about too many people. The other big problem is the fact that way too damn many people have no idea what goes into putting grub on their table. They are so far removed from the farm that they have no clue. Living here on the west coast has gotten obsurd. Of the 3 west coast states all hound hunting for bear and cats has been outlawed. Now they have introduced wolves and the ranchers can't even shoot em when they kill cattle. They gotta call the goverment and let them take care of it. And we all know how well that works. Bad way to start a year on a rant. But I don't see it gettin better.
