$1000 cull or a $100 cull take your pick. Its all just luck of the draw, every litter of every bloodline is going to have a cull in it and you can take that to the bank. The dogs/pups that I want to own can not be bought but are entrusted to you as a gift with certain guidelines and it takes alot of time to get em too.
You are right about that, it was the same when I ran dog trial beagles. However I am very new to this game and I am sure that I would not be trusted (AS you say right off) and RIGHTFULLY SO. But i do want to get some to start with so rather than take a shot in the dark from a I really don't know cross, I would rather start with a pup or two and train them the way I want to hunt, from as good a stock as I can afford. Or maybe a 5 to 10 month old that has some pen training as well as some wood hunts. Thank you for your input, very helpful.

Papadave,

Your question is very valid, and I wish there was an easy answer for you.  I've been around other types of dogs as well (mainly bird dogs) and I will tell you from my 15+ years of dealing with hog dogs that dog dealings seem very different in this sport than most others....and honestly I've never quite figured out why.

In most other dog disciplines, most times price can be in line with performance....hog dogs not so much so.  For whatever reason, there is almost a taboo in this sport about people who frequently sell pups and it seems most who try and do so are looked down upon.  Those who do sell a bunch (hence the well known names) tend to be those who are best at marketing.

If I may offer you any advice at all, it would be this.  If I were in your shoes, I would spend a good deal of time on here reading and learning to decipher BS.  Once you have in your mind a few folks who perhaps you feel may be the real deal, I would fire off a few PM's inquiring about pups.  I personally breed very few pups and none with the specific purpose of selling, but when I do raise a litter and have extras I'm always tickled to get those into the hands of people who I feel will do right by the dog.  There are many people on here who are not dog peddlers, and most likely feel the same as I.

DISCLAIMER- I have no pups for sale, nor any near future breedings planned so I'm not trying to hard sell you any dogs.   Just my opinion, and what I would do is all.  Smiley

PaPaDaVe,

Go hunt with as many people and dogs as you can, don't get hung up on a certain breed like I did when I first started. Then make your decison based on what you see and like.

Don't believe anything you read about any line of dogs until you see it with your own eyes.

If you want a DOG... You might have to travel... I have driven over 12 hours to get pups... P.S. don't buy into all that yellow power BS... There are cats out there that are still bred the right way... Maybe we could get a catahoula vs them piss colored dogs?!

Its hard as hell to buy a really good dog from proven lines unless you want to spend a couple grand but you might get lucky.  Its even harder to buy good brood dogs that are proven lines of working dogs most won't let good producing dogs go like that and then most people don't have the patiences to see it threw from breeding them to pups. to  young dogs, to started dogs, to half finished and then on to finished.    A lot of people think they do but when all is said and done they don't. Also what you run them young pups with is going to make a big impact on how they turn out as older dogs keep that in mind.  I don't know were you are from are who you know my advise is to go with as many people as you can go with watch the dogs see the dogs and make friends with people .   I will be the first to tell you being a good friend to people will most likely get you a better dog from proven lines and probably given to you vs what you might buy many times over .  Stay away from the commercial crap and go with the Ole Red Neck that hunts his dogs four five times a week are when he can, he might not live in a great big house drive a fancy pickup but you will sure nuff know what he is about when you see and hunt with his dogs.

I'll agree with the others about moving around a bit and seeing some dogs work for yourself.  Shouldn't be too hard because not a whole bunch of people breeding and raising what their hunting anymore it seems.

You might start with Larry Paker and his line of dogs. I believe he lives right outside of Lake Charles.

I couldnt tell you which is the best.  One thing I can tell you, is that the people who make a habit of talking about how great their dogs are, steer clear of.  The people who know they have good dogs dont have to advertise, their actions speak for themselves.  Some of the guys that have given you some advise on here I would consider to have great dogs, listen to their advise and you will be in good shape.  Best of luck to you.
