Had a farmer call me last night and said he had seen a bunch of fresh rooting in one of his fields yesterday.  The place he was talking about isn't very big and with it being the last morning of deer season (yeah!) I was reluctant to go.  He talked me into coming out so I took a couple of my younger dogs thinking they might not get out as far should we not strike anything quickly.  We got to the place about daylight, unloaded and headed towards the woods.  At the edge of the woods was a herd of cattle and so I decided to ease on past them before turning out so as to not tempt the young dogs to screw up.

We went a couple hundred yards past and I let them out.  There was rooting, trails, and all kinds of real fresh sign at the edge of this patch.  After about 15 minutes the dogs starting trickling back in.  We were about to move down when my youngest dog Madison (in the pic) went flying by us and towards the gate we had come in.  I didn't think much until I heard her start barking.  I was mad as heck because I knew she had run back and got on those cows.  My partner and I started walking that way and I told him why don't you wait at the buggy just in case.  Before I got much closer other dogs joined in and I was real mad at this point that she had coaxed the ones that know better into getting in those cows.  I got a little closer and to my surprise there stood a hog with dogs hammering away.  I yelled back at Jeff to let Zeus out, and I got a front row seat to the show.  Not often you get to see the catch, but Zeus hit that boar full speed and so hard it rolled them both.  When the dust settled, he came up locked on the ear with the hogs head held down. I ran in and legged him...flipped and got him tied.  We were in the process of breaking off Zeus when a rear leg came free and the hog started flopping.  About the same time I noticed blood was running down Zeus' front leg rather bad.  In order to tend to him quickly, we went ahead and stuck him.  I though Zeus may have cut an artery in his leg because I've never seen a cut pour blood like this was.  I ran back and got a towel from the buggy and held in on him for a good while.  Finally the bleeding slowed then stopped and we decided to call it an early morning.

Not the biggest hog (prob. around 200) but some of the biggest cutters we've run across in a little bit.

Good job Bryant!  I really like that little saddle back gyp, sounds like she is going to work out for you.  Hope Zeus heals up quick.
