I have owned a bunch of pointers and several that were Elhew bred. The ones that I had that were bred close up were kind of crazy.

oh it is an Elhew Pointer, duuuUrrr.   I like the way German Short haired pointers point with their leg up.  I also like Tennessee Walking horses, but then I learned how some people equate those to negro and gay rodeo horses.  sorry if that was off topic.

I've been thinking about crossing American Staffordshire Terriers with German short haired pointers.

Hog Dog Mike could tell me more about the craziness you have experienced?

We bought two Elhews from this field trial judge. Mine was a female and looked like a million dollars. She would hunt for about 30 minutes and she was going back to the truck. I put a shock collar on her to stop it and all that did was make her run faster. Never broke her of it. Her brother was a little better but not tough like most English pointers.

I trained several for other people and experienced some of the similar things. One dog would be doing pretty good then she would get this stupid look on her face and come back in.

Worked several down on the King Ranch at a hunting camp and some were fine and some were just not tough like the Rebel bred dogs. It was so hot down there the GSPs didn't work that well. Out of over 100 dogs we had less than 10 setters and 0 GSPs. A Rebel bred field trial English pointer is a tough running dog.

Depends on what your looking for as far as range, grit, bottom, etc.  For me a long range yellow blackmouth cur is perfect with an junkyard pit ready to honor the bay;)  imo.

my idea of a good cross is sevral breeds crossed but I have to explain each breed and what I hope to capture from each...

use a running walker coyote hound with lots of speed that runs to catch...

use a leggy and medium boned pitbull that is not hyper that catches hard and likes to hunt and uses its nose to wind and trail.

use the old type mtn cur that has a houndy look that has a lot of hunt, nose, and hunts about a 600 yard circle around the 4 wheeler. a dog that will hunt cold tracks but cuts and slashes looking for the hot tracks. a dog that can take the heat and stick to a track...

dogs to use for breeding should weigh around 60 pounds.

use these 3 breeds and have 3/4 mtn cur, 1/8 pitbull and 1/8 running walker...or...5/8 mtn cur, 1/4 running walker, and 1/8 pitbull...

I have been thinking of this cross for a while now... Smiley

ChupacabraXBigfoot does it every time. Lol There is no one answer to this question. Find what you like and reproduce it.
