what is an Elhew Pointer?

A strain of bird dogs bred by one of the legends of bird dog hunting in south texas, he has since passed away, they were noted for endless bottom and hunting on the run large south texas quail ranches until they feet were destroyed, they have as much bottom as the best foxhound used to have.  But like anything else people ruin them and judge the whole line by one dog somebody claims was Elhew bred and had according to a trainer that it had to be shocked for coming in to check in???   They should make great hog dogs purebred or crossbred as they have not been ruined by popularly like some of the hot gotta have one dog breeds one sees bringing $1000 for a 6 week old pup in Livestock Weekly classifieds.  (blackmouth curs website i saw today on LW website??)

at one time the elhew line was a bad to the bone strain of English pointers that were always winning the hunts. The breeder of this line had some of the best...but how many generations removed from this mans kennel does it take for these dogs to regress...don't blame the name when in reality it is the folks who jumped on this line of dogs who really did not have the knowledge that the original breeder had about breeding better dogs and just as important...knowing bird dogs...

you are right but I was thinking more jaw power and increase the chances of less barking on track...I don't mind a little open but not too much...

I do agree w you ,the hounds we breed to are very gritty but I like the pitt bc it makes them very closed mouth on trail some are dead silent ,that's the only reason for the pitt .also some of them do have a better bite ,bc of the pitt
