Bad hog ....on Friday
His hardware
Old boar and a sow we got
Me and bad boy....he lost
Well we finally got rid of deer season in GA's southern zone and now we can hunt. We got down on Wed. afternoon and hit the woods Thursday morning,....hunted a small head of woods that usually has a boar hog in it but nothing this morning. Moved a little ways to a pecan orchard and finally get a couple out of this,....plus run a big bear out too....he comes right out of the woods next to my wife Donna....she's about to have a spazoolum and pass out. Her first meeting with a live bear in the wild, made her trip.
Friday we head to a big place we hunt on the Ocmulgee river,.....about a 1,000 acres and this year is full of hogs. Now we've hunted here before, I love this place for some reason, but we never seem to really kill a bunch of hogs on any given day there, but I still love it. Dogs split and Cletis' dog Rebel winds up with Randy's dogs and Scott's dogs on a young boar that gives them all a stabbing. He gets Randy's down down and up against a tree, stabs him in the throat, finally someone gets to them and kills the hogs. He stabs Rebel in the cheek and he's bleeding all over, so we take him out.
We move on and my half Plott Abby and Cletis' younger male Plott Booger catch a pig and kill it before we get to them. They come to us and we're moving on when the dogs just blow up and go to baying,....this is in a cane thicket that's dang thick. We can't find what they're baying but they seem to think it's there. There's a huge old log on the ground and I think I'll climb up on it and see better, which I do. Well Booger is as nervous as all get out, looking for the hog but can't find it, all the other dogs are looking as well. I figure the hog is bedded under the log, which he was, and they can't see him, but Lord you could smell him for sure. So I'm waiting for him to bust out and I'm gonna kill him outright from my perch....
Scotts' little catahoula finally sees him and runs him out of his bed.....but of cousre he runs out on the other side so I can't see him and shoot him. I thought that I should get the new Lidcam camera and video this,....that is until Belle goes boiling in on him and he comes out to meet her, I hear 'em hit and she comes back out, which means she's hurt. Now it's a different game,....we need to kill this hog quick.
He moves a few yards further out and I come of my log and ease toward him, Cletis is moving around to the other side so we might get this dude after all. I can't seem to see him since he's about the color of the leaves on that cane it seems. I can hear him rush the dogs a time or two and I think they decide to stop trying him and just bay. I get to where I can see him and he's a biggun for sure,....I'm figuring that if he ever sees one of us, the party will be over and he'll tear out running and leave the country so we need to get some lead into him.
I can't shoot 'cause there's a dog on the far side of him.....by now he's got the dogs standing back baying, I know that my little M1 won't shoot through this hog sideways, but I still just can't do it. Finally he turns so his rear is quartering my way and can shoot him longways......I put one high in his rear and it breaks his spine and drops his rear end. The dogs swarm him but he's still working in the front end,......slinging dogs off as I walk up. Cletis gets there at the same time and has a much better shot at his head with his pistol, so I say "plug him" and he does.
He has cut Belle on the side a dang good slice and Abby on the inside of the back leg. I think he bit Scott's dog on the foot and he hit Booger on the front leg. I sure was glad that Scott's dog finally saw him under the log......I think he had been there all morning with us hunting and killing hogs nearby. He weighs 175 gutted and is covered with old scars.
We made a run on Sat. to another place but the hogs had left it....finally got a good sow killed that afternoon before the storm hit. I think we got 11 total for the 3 days. I stapled Belle up but of course she removed every one the next day.....so now the lampshade for her. We had a great time and got to hunt with some good folks again. It's time to get some hunting done and I can't wait to get back down there again.
