. I had my dogs bay a group that numbered around thirty adults and maybe 60 70 piglets I came over the rise and all I saw was two big hogs ganging up on my dogs so I came charging in there to shoot one before they got hurt. I got a big surprise. I was chasing the dogs piglets were in front of me behind me on both sides 150 to 200 lb. hogs kept running past me I was by myself. made me want to wet myself. in the adrenalin rush I stopped in the creek to pick up a 6 lb piglet that couldn't get up the bank It was squealing like crazy and all I could hear was loud grunting and chomping on the banks above me. I heard one start down the bank as i was zipping the piglet in my back pack. dirt hit me in the head as i took off to the other side of the creek it was coming to help a piglet in distress. I cleared some ground quick. I usually slip and slide going up those muddy banks but I don't even remember struggling at all just up and over in a couple steps. on top of that didn't even get one caught again after that. I hate them big groups every time I get in one my one rcd grabs one and it gets rescued by another i hunted for three days a while back and all i got was bunched up groups 15 to 30 always big hogs. my dogs always end up empty when they bust up. whats the deal on that and what do I need to do to pull a pig out of a big group like that. It sure stinks to see all those pigs and come up empty.

Leave the catch dogs at the house, get a full auto rifle with a silencer, get a good sniper post in the top of a tree at the bay, turn your ipod to "let the bodies hit the floor", and let the bullets fly!

I can tell you what the problem is, but you and most others may think I'm being rude. You said "rcd" that's problem number one. Don't bust the group, push them. I wouldn't have believed it a few months ago, but I've seen it several times and done it twice now. Move them gently and catch them out of it till your tired of catching them. If you've got the right dogs, they will stick with the sounder

thanks for the advice. It confirms my line of thinking. I am pretty new to hog doggin. I've only been doing it for a year or two and need all the help I can get. So, the rcd is the problem? I should lead it in instead? When should I let go? Maybe when one makes a stand out of the group or just unleash when i get up close?

A lot of times you'll end up have one or two hogs at a time make a break for it while the rest leave together. The dogs should bay the stragglers and as soon as the hog is caught they should roll out to the group again.
I only Ean the rcd is the problem insomuch as when a rough catchy dog or dogs bails off in there, they generally go tO mauling shoats or trying to catch sows and it busts the group.

Yo yo your catch dog ! Tie a lariat rope to his collar and ease him in. When he catches pull him and the hog back to you. Take your time and dont bust them. Sometimes you can catch alot of hogs before they bust on you. Once they bust your find dogs can pick up a few more.

We run into this situation every year when the sows group up after having their piglets. We run lots of catch dogs, normally 4-5. We would cut 2-3 catch dogs into the sounder, and quickly follow them in. Any hogs that come back to rally we would send the other catch dogs on. Not all the curs but some of them would stay with the sounder as it moved on. Gather up the catch dogs and head to the curs that are back on the sounder and repeat it all over again.
I think our best string of hogs out of one sounder was 8 or 9. We were wore ou after all that action.

we used to run into this [problem ? ] alot on the ranch we hunted . we could really thin out a sounder with the loose dogs and one cd . i worked one sounder for 8 hours just couldn't go no mo . the loose dogs 2 of them would circle the sounder send in the catch dog , when we got to the catch dog the loose baying dogs would roll out and re-bay the sounder . like i said we worked that sounder for 8 hours killing 10 hogs and i lost count on the juveniles and baby's that didn't root no mo . the rough dogs just scatter them into the wind . it's alot of fun but will make you plum worn out at the end of the day . of course this was all done on foot no atvs and ended a long way from the truck . if you want to work a whole sounder looser is better ,and you don't turn loose the cd till you can see the whites of their eyes .

Sows will group up right Before they drop piglets most of the time and stay together until the younguns grow a bit........simple animal survival.......strenght in numbers Finally the hog doggin can resume!
