I am located in the eastern part of kentucky and just getting started in the sport. Kentucky prohibits catching and transporting wild hogs while they are still alive so I was thinking about a small pack 3 or 4 maybe 5 dogs to bay a hog so I could walk in and shoot the hog and bring it out. What I want to know is what type dogs would ya'll recommend for this type pack? or Should I go with a couple cd's as well and stick 'em?

Might be hard to get a clean shot if you have too many dogs. I would think more than 2-3 would make it tough. As far as catch dogs I think that is more personal preference and will you be alone or with help.

i would only hunt 2dogs 3 most so if you or going to shoot the hog you have more room to make the shot. but i like to stick the hog over shooting them.if i have to kill them. thats just me

mostly it would be me and my son who is 15 .It is legal to kill every hog you see and against the law to walk away without killing whatever you bay or trap. I don't know much about the sport just interested in finding info to get started

I've done it a few time when my dogs didn't catch or no Catch dog.  I just get really close. Less margin of error.  I work my dogs in a pen to get them to back up and bay. You may try that.    Just try to find you some loose baying dogs that will stop a hog and get a gun that will knock one down for sure.   A second shot will not as well thought out as the first one.

I like just about everyone else.  There's nothing more exciting than sticking or tying one.

when i first started i shot them. then i tried a spear. now i only shoot the real bad ones that i cant take without help because i almost always hunt alone. When you get that first one by the back legs and feel that adrenalin when you are committed to flip it and its to late to turn back or a new guys eyes as big as saucers when you do it. I love it i always lose stuff and forget where i am cross creeks without remembering it. its awesome be worth getting cut for.

oh yeah I forgot. I was going to say, I quit shooting because its almost impossible to miss a dog if you do it alot. especially with that adrenaline flowing maybe if you had em trained so you could call em off. I have no interest in just shooting a hog tried it and it was boring i figure this is how the hunt was meant to be up close and personal.

This is just me but if youre going to just kill the hog I wouldnt bother with a catch dog. I dont see taking the chance of getting a catch dog cut down for a dead hog. Having a catch dog is an extra dog to feed and extra vet bills.

I'd hunt two to three dogs. Just my opinions though. Good luck!

x2...sometimes 2 will work but 1 loose baying dog will back up and bay and the hog will not feel threatened.

My buddy Tom and I shot over dogs for years we never even owned a catch dog.  We always ran 3 to 5 dogs you just have to pick your shots and be damn good with a gun.  A lot of dogs will be gun shy so it is best to rasie them from young.  All Tom has is Lacy dogs and there is no telling how many hogs this man shot over those dogs in his time.  I got a Lacy gyp that dearly loves guns when  you shoot she will be looking for the bullit to hit .  Our dogs knew what was coming when we got there and when we walked in they would loosen up give us room to shoot but that takes a lot of time and a lot of shooting over dogs for them to do that .  The instance the gun sounded they were like Hoover Vac's and just sucked in on the hog so you better not miss.  I ran cur dogs cur hound crosses myself with my one lacy gyp Bell.  If I was you I would look into a couple good bred Lacys they do not tend to be gun shy at all and are very smart dogs easy to train when it comes to shooting over dogs.

How many is not as important as what kind. You want dogs that back up and give the hog its space if its not moving. If the hog tries to run they need to grab rear.

A majority of the time when I bay and shoot the dogs are backed up barking at a clump of brush, wolf grass, or some kind of cover. I end up just standing and watching patiently. Usually the hog or one of the hogs will pop out to look around. That is the one you shoot. I regularly bay up multiple hogs. The hogs usually clump up in cover and the dogs will back up 10, 15 yds and just bark. The dogs kind of spread out and circle them. If you have ever seen cattle group up with dogs or when coyotes are around... Hogs are almost identical. Very, very seldon do i have to make a shot where the dog is 5yds or closer.

I am planing to raise the dogs I am going to hunt.I am thinking cur/plott cross.I plan to obedience train them before I ever take them to the woods. I want to get them minding and a good handle on them before they face a bad hog. I plan to build a bay pen so I can train em to back off when told to.

To tell you the truth I really like shooting over dogs more than I do catching and sticking!  I miss it a lot .  Man you can stand back watch the bay watch the action what the dogs work the hell out of that big bo hog and not have to worry about a catch dog getting killed its I myself just love it and been thinking more and more to going back to it since all my damn help is moving away ahahahahahahah but Am game for either if I got the help.

Another advantage to it is you aint got to lug around a dat blame catch dog everywere you go thats the best part !  Also from what Am hearing all these buy stations are telling everybody around here they are taking no more hogs that are caught by dogs they turned down several of my buddys today and these hogs been in a pen for a while healed up .

I agree with Texas hog dogs...I used 5 dogs and they would catch sows and smaller hog so I stuck those...big boars they would bay them and catch them if they tried to break and then release and bay...they were cautious about it and didn't get cut up very often...When I showed up I would have them catch the hog and I would stick the hog...after a time when the dogs got cut down and the hog walked off it was time for a change. I didn't want to feed a catch dog so I bought a gun and trained my dogs to back up and I shot the hog...that worked out best for me. Sometimes if the dogs were very fresh they would catch the hog and I didn't have a choice but to stick the hog.

I use a cap pistol or a 22 pistol with blanks and call the small pups to me while I shoot the pistol. When they are all around me I shoot it several times again so that they can smell the gun powder and this conditions them to gunfire. most curs will be gunshy if not conditioned as pups or young dogs...

My son hunts with me alot but he is getting to the age where girls rank higher than hounds lol and I had a mule rear up and fall on me a few years back and messed my back and hips up some so if he is not there to help shooting would be my best option.  And I agree I could watch good bay dogs work all day.
