I'm new to the pup starting phase of hog doggin and was wondering if anyone had some advice on how to get them interested and the do's and dont's of how to start them. we have 2 Bmc pups and 2 catahoula pups that are almost 4 months old. any advice is helpful. --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=30.162848,-96.439487 |

put a piglit in a cage get another dog to bark at it and the pups should take interest and just keep moving them up to bigger ones til they get old enough to hunt

Make sure you keep em wanting more. Don't over expose them. Pups get bored easy.

Get the pig out of the cage and get their attention. When they perk up drag it away from them and stop. Let them feel they are chasing it. Lay it down and let it squeel a bit then drag away from them again. If they are gamey they should take to it Perty easy and begin baying. Then take advice from Brad W from above and keep em wanting more. |

Then take advice from Brad W from above and keep em wanting more. I agree 100%, works for me. At 6-8 mths i let mine hit the woods....i dont expect much at first but they catch on perty quick. Finally the hog doggin can resume! |

3 or 4 months I'll show em a hog if they bay they will start goin for walks during the day in a controlled area where I know there arent hogs the 7 or 8 months I'll show em another hog if they bay pretty good it's all woods from there on out!
This is just opinion of mine but if you put a dog in a bay pen to much I think you cuttin the dogs desire to hunt down drastically every dog that I have started like this are longer range dogs. The first female I started on hogs would work a hog over in a bay pen so everytime I'd get another dog that I wanted to try out I'd throw it in the pen with this female after she had been in the bay pen so many times she will not hunt a lick she's lazy she will stick around me until another dog strikes and she will go to bay. What I'm trying to say is don't over due the bay pen thing unless you want a bay pen dog.
