I've got an 8 month old pup that I've had since he was 6 weeks old. I've put a lot of training into him and he hates a hog. I hunted him this past week and he ran with great with the older dogs and was at every bay either caught or baying. The only problem is I can't get him to cross water, even if there is a caught hog on the other side. From others experience is this something he will grow out of with age or he a lost cause? Any advice will be appreciated.

There our two types of pain: The temporary pain of training or the permenant pain of failure. Choose wisely...

he's still young should get over it with age and confidence . if not summers coming on . take the dog to the pond and get in the water with him and teach em how ta swim . i would swim my dogs alot in the summer when it's to hot to hunt . there is no better way to keep a dog in shape during the summer than swimming . sounds like a pretty good propsect once you get him out of the water shyness thing . work on that with him . good luck , MR. You seen what happened to Leroy when he quit crossing water!!! I probably messed up getting rid of him for that... If you have more patience than i do, keep working with him and he will probably get over it.. Like halfbreed said, keep him in the water as much as possible.. I took my pups out today and just walked them through alot of back water... They all made it home..

when i got henry i found out he was afraid of it too, find yourself a shallow stream, not to wide but atleast enough to get feet wet, just walk him across it back and forth, hes still young so he will learn, now i can throw henry in the river and he swims it with no problem

Training dogs is not about quantity, it's more about timing, the right situations, and proper guidance...After that it's up to the dog... A hunting dog is born not made...

Thanks fellas. This is the advice I was hoping to hear and I never really thought about taking him swimming. I have high hopes for him so I don't mind some extra training.

Man you aught to have been me I had one that would not cross water and would not go through a fence. He was a pain kept putting him in the woods and he is just fine with both now.

Where I live, You can't hunt with dogs that won't cross water. You should find out about water earlier than 8 months next time. It might get over it in time, but I wouldn't keep it. I've had to get rid of a few for that same reason.
