Went out to our honey hole yesterday morning and dumped out about 9:00 a.m. Brutis struck about 30 minutes later and then we had a solid bay. We could hear the pigs raising hell and we knew it was a big group. The bay dogs worked the pigs over perfect and kept the group pretty tightly bayed. Couldn't do anything for all the pigs everywhere. Sent the Catch dog in and nothing happened for a while. Finally dogs started hammering and there were pigs running everywhere so we knew they had one singled out. They picked the wrong hog to mess with. Rocky got there and was caught and baydogs were caught also. Grabbed the .243 ( JUST IN CASE, ACTUALLY SAVED OUR DOGS!) and headed towards them. Pig was squealing so we didn't think he was very big. About 15 yards from us they're caught and then everything gets quiet. Pig runs out onto a  terrace and the bay dogs are hammering right in his face. We knew the bulldog was dead because he wasn't there, we could see the pigs teeth from where we were, and his ears were bloody from being caught. Since we didn't have a CD Rance put a bullet right in his shoulder and dropped him. He got up and tried to run off about 2 minutes later and I shot him 2 more times before he died. Every single dog we had got cut and found the Bulldog dead about 10 minutes after we loaded all the bay dogs. The pig was right around 300 with 3 in. on one side and 2 1/2 in. on the other side. Rocky was starting to make a dang good CD but its just part of the sport. RIP Rocky.
Ill post pics tomorrow.

RIP ROCKY

Sorry to hear about Rocky.

I guess you're right about it being part of the sport but I truly hate that part.
I keep a heavy feeling in the pit of my stomach almost every hunt these days. I haven't lost a dog on a hunt in almost 12 years and its been 5 years since Ive seen a friends dog killed by a bad boar. I feel like the law of averages is trying to creep up on me and my dogs again.

Very sorry to hear that.  You never know what is going to happen when you turn a bulldog into a sounder like that.  I always have at least two bulldogs to turn loose these days.  Cuts down on vet bills it seems.

Where were the hits that killed the bulldog? Sorry for your loss.

Thanks everyone. And the cuts were on his throat between his cut collar and vest.
