So my pup roscoe is showing me a ton of potential! Best pup I have ever had. Only problem I just noticed in the last 2 hunts.is he is starting to whine when he hits a hog and it breaks... I have a lead dog that barks.on trail and I'm getting rid of her for it. But he is only 7mo and I quit huntin him with my lead dog so he don't pick up her bad habits. Is this a start to him barking on trail and if so will he grow out of it? Thanks for any help guys! I just don't want to ruin this pup.

I have a gyp that does the same thing. She only whines when she can see it though. I assume she's whining cause she wants to catch up to it so bad.

Had a gyp that did the same. Silent on track, whined when right on pigs butt, bayed when she stopped pig. Like Robert said, just excited.

well ill say this the nights she barks on track we dont catch any pigs the nights she is silent you couldnt ask for a better dog so barking on track has some effect on the hog not stoping to bay i have seen it a bunch of time out of the same gyp

My gyp didn't bark on track, only whined when right on the pigs tail (when she could see it).

I do know he is looking at it when he is whining. I just didn't want it to become bark and chase... That's what the gyp does she is quiet tell she hits it once she hits it she barks and then quits 800yrd in to the chase. And she never stops the hog which Pisses me off! So I don't want him to do the.same... So if its just excitement I'm ok but I just didn't know if anybody yall have had an issue such as This and if so were u able to solve it?

Might try hunting him with nuthin but silent dogs if that's Wut u want him to b. I don't think a lil whinning is going to affect the hogs like a wide open hound would..jmo

I have hunted my 2 cur dogs which are silent on track, with my buddie's Plott hounds which are open on track.....done this for 4 years, it has had no affect on either of my dogs,.....one has always squealed when in sight of a running hog, still does. I am of the mindset that if a dog is going to bark,.....it's going to bark, not a lot we can or should do about it, but that's just my humble opinion.

So I guess its let him be, keep him on hogs, and don't run him with open mouth dogs... Is what I'm gathering. I think I can do that if there is any thing I'm missing?

The whining is just excitement from seeing the hog. Most dogs that people call silent will do that. I have 2 that are silent but if they are seeing the hog right in front of them they will whine a little.. I've run a lot of silent dogs with open dogs and mine still didn't bark running. I'm sure it has an effect on some dogs but most of the time a dog is either open or silent no matter his company..

I would be more worried about her teaching him that it is OK to quit a hog / not stop it than barking on trail. We have dogs that up until about 3 or so years old were silent but with age will yip / bark on trail some days and then others they are silent, we also have one that is dead silent no matter what and he is hunted with the 'open dogs'.

x2...and a young pup might bark because he is falling behind in the races. I also know that some young dogs open some on track and quiet down as they get older.
