reuben , not being a smart a$$ just dont know , could you explain exactly how you go about breaking your dog off game with scent ?  the steps you follow , thanks in advance

go ahead and order the scent the directions are on the bottle . it's musky and used in and on the dogs sleeeping quarters and the dog it's self . the dog just gets sick of the smell . used it on the beagles for years , then get a bottle of deer training scent and lay a trail for the dogs to make sure it worked if not light em up . i allways used bill boatman lures and scents , but alas nothing is forever ol bill hung it up after 60 someodd years of buissness .  i've heard graws and cronkys are good

I ordered my deer break sents long time ago out of the full cry magazine. I believe it was from cronks and he still advertises on there.

my bottle is still have full and I have broke quite a few dogs off of deer. The label is gone but I never did follow directions. I tend to do things my way most the time...

I have an E-collar but never use it for deer breaking. Instead I went to tractor supply and bought me a cattle prod...they are cheap enough...works good for dogs that act up in the dog box too.

I get a stick about 3 or 4 foot long and tie a white hankerchief or paper towel on the end of it. I then put a small about of deer scent on the rag and walk out to where the dog is tied up or kenneled. I make sure he can smell the deer and then I touch him with the rag and light him up. repeat 3 times about 4 or 5 seconds apart.

Repeat procedure in a day or 2...

on the third time which is a few days later... let him sniff the rag again and give a small bump... by this time the dog will be wanting a way out of there and this about all the dog needs...

might have to give a tune up of one day later on but maybe not...

If you need to break a few dogs always start with the alpha...my reasoning here is that if the alpha is scared $hitle$$ of the deer scent then the rest of the pack will follow suit...

With pups I start them in the pen on hog first or with a few mock hunts and they are usually at least 6 or 7 months old...I will break them off of deer when they are first starting to hunt...lot easier that way.

this has worked for me...but there are other ways to do it...

ONLY WAY IVE SEEN SCENTS WORK IS WITH A DOG IN A BARREL AND A BIG HILL. IVE NEVER HAD THE COLLAR PAD DO A DANG THING

OK... I've heard a lot of different things about this barrel trick. Do ya'll really do this? How does it not hurt the dog? How far and big of a hill? And how many times do you have to roll them before they don't want anything to do with the scent?

When I was a kid we would put ourselves in a barrel. You learn to avoid the bumpy hills. Getting in a big tire it goes off course and falls over the barrel goes straighter. I guess I have never been right in the head. But if we did it to ourselves it can't be that bad. Never done it to a dog but having been in the barrel I could see dog would not like the change. As far as steep we liked it better just avoid the sudden stops. We would go down to the creek because it was steep and the water gave a softer stop. It does sound mean but it is more disorientating than it hurts. When the barrel stops you don't know which way is up If yoou think it is mean go put yourself in a barrel and see for yourself it is fun.

a friend of mine uses a 55 gallon barrel and puts a live coon in it with the dog. he puts the lid on and bangs on the barrel and rolls it for a little while and then he lets the dog and coon out and he says the dog is cured from running coon...never seen it done but that is what he told me...

REUBEN, I like your method.  A friend of mind that goes by Skeeterkiller on here , posted some time back about using  mouse traps baited
with Conks deer scents to break puppies before they even get a chance to run one. I'm talking young pups. For older dogs he uses your method of shock therapy.

What is your thoughts on this ? There 10 mnth. old pups. Been working them with scent drags, in a pen and fixing to start mock hunts.

I will say that it should work...but no pussyfooting around. when the rag touches the dog the e-collar should light him up...you want it to be an unforgettable experience.

I dont think putting any kinda sent on and all around dogs will break them. My dogs kennels buggie tracking collars and dog houses all smell like skunk. My young dogs are still baying skunks...
