When is the optimum time to breed your gyp to ensure she has the best opportunity to take???
My black gyp started bleeding the Saturday of the TDHA hunt, which means tmo will be the 14th day she has been in.. We've been periodically putting Blaster in these last 3 days but she is eating his A$$ up! Is she still not ready or will I need to muzzle her?? This will be her first breeding so she doesn't really know what's going on... Any help will be appreciated! Really trying to make this happen

From what I always understood a gyps heat cycle is 3 parts over 3 weeks, first week swelling begins and a lil bleeding, 2nd week bleeding clears up, clear fluid is present, still swollen. This is the week I understand is the only time period the gyp can be bred or the best chances the pregnancy will take. 3rd week the gyp starts to come out of heat, less fluid present and swelling is going down. .
I dont know how accurate this actually is, but it sounds good anyways!!

Tony, Most females that cylce "correctly" are in standing heat from the night of the 10 day-13 day since spotting began. Pegestrone testing is the most percise detection, but it is costly and needs a base line typically to be "correct" in a vet's eyes. It sounds to me like she is a bit ouchy. It is common in cur females. I would check to see if she is flagging. If she is, you can have someone help you hold her head forward, while the male handles his business. Lionel Richie playing in the background can't hurt.

Big Ben's quote is pretty much right on. If you're at day 14, you better hurry if you're not already a little too late. I usually use between 7 and 14 days as a general rule.

Sounds like she is going out. I would not hold her down. He probably breed her when you first put her in with him. I would just wait and see now.

In -most- bitches the most successful conception rate occurs between 10-14 days after bleeding/swelling begins. Usually the bitch will flag hard on her most fertile days.....then again, we have had some that never flag at all. That's just a general rule.

That's good too. She's my best gyp and I would like for her to be able to hunt next weekend if at all possible

I've always left gyps in from the time I first caught em coming in for a week. Probably don't amount to much but I want him to stick a least a dozen times, I've always had success with bigger litters that way, i don't know if that has anything to do with it, but it's worked. I leash mean gyps up to the corner of a fence where she can't go no where and he usually makes it happen. Blaster's experienced, I'm sure he got his

they usually bleed for 10 days and on the eleventh day they are ready to breed.. you will know if she is flagging/posing and on the 21st day they are about out of the heat cycle.
sometimes it takes about 15 minutes of getting aquainted before she lets a male mount. this is about normal but like already mentioned...some females are a little she and get nervous, especially around a larger dominant type male.
sometimes it helps to hold her by the collar and pet /talk to her while the male does his business...

Quit Internet hog hunting and mind your own business if you dont have something nice to say. I apologize that we dont teach our dogs to number 2 in one spot to clean it out.... That was an empty pen. I threw them in there because Big E was hunting and had the cattle trailer where they normally do their business
