Great idea, can you post a picture? I wanna steal your design.

I got a phonecall from a friend about a puddle in a freshly drained canal over by yalls unit the other day but the rain had filled it before I could get over there. Supposed to have been a bunch of carp and huge yellas

So you wanna good fish gig huh?   Grin

I have mine built by a man in Hawaii by the name of Daryl Wong... built this gun custom for me to my specifications... his guns are renowned around the world as much as works of art as they are instruments of death   Wink Grin ... teak-wood stock, carbon fiber barrel, 65" shaft, three 5/8" bands with an individual draw of just over 100#'s... all three loaded means almost 350#'s of force when you pull the trigger...  Grin   You don't have a good grip on this sombitch when you pull the trigger and you'll be missin' some teeth!!!  Cheesy

Had him build it for freedive shooting in the gulf, depending on how many bands I choose to load... can shoot 1# snapper, all the way up to 300#'ers....(trust me  Grin)... attached is a reel with 200' of 500# spectra braid(with drag of course)... pinpoint accurate/deadly out to over 25'... slip a slide on 7.62 powerhead on the tip and even Jaws don't want no part of it HAHA  Grin

... shot many a stingray from the bow of a boat(for sharkbait), and many other creatures that I shant mention....  Grin  ...been tossin' around the idea of deer hunting with it to tell the truth...  Shocked Grin

Particularly good day out in deep water... killed a lot of fish that day with the old gig...  Grin

waylon. how many prongs, how many barbs per prong, how wide and how long for each prong? i will start sketching it out when i get your deminsions and make a mold when im done. i got pleanty of aluminum cans to melt down, but if you got a tig welder, i would try that with stainless rod instead of all-thread.

In all seriousness...  Grin  Show me a pic of the fish you are trying to gig, the depth, etc... and I'll show you exactly what you need to kill all of them.

Noah I'm gigging in water no deeper than my chest and the bottom is sand stone or other rocks, that's what's killing my gigs....my misses  Undecided The fish are carp and gar 99% of the time that usually range about 4- 5 feet. I get lucky and spear some but when I throw the gig at'em and miss some times the gig slams rock and snaps some barbs off. What I see you using looks like single barb gigs, what I'm wanting is a broader gig with probably 4-6 barbs and about 4-6 inches wide that is hand thrown, it will be slower but compensate for my suckness at throwing into the water with it's extra barbs. I did get a cotton mouth today and one turtle by the head walking to our spot, but missed 2 pretty good fish, the 3rd snapped my barb when he started trying to roll on me and that ended our day.

Deer hunting with that thing is one awesome idea, now your starting to thing like me. if you can argue your native american blood you can come up here and hunt with me on restricted land and state game laws do not apply,All you have to be elidgable (spelling I know) for enrollment in a tribe to do it. I don't abuse that but do take full advantage of it  Grin

Have had several other N/A's over the years try and talk me into pursuing eligibility, never have been able to gather any hard facts however... as my extended family don't talk much lol... would be nice, but oh well... I ain't a deer hunter any more noways...  I done got the hog-dog sickness thank God Grin

Back to killin' fish... throwin' a tip into rock over and over, you gonna have a hard time with most anything.... my first suggestion would be to change your angle...  Wink  Have you ever considered strappin' a mask on and shooting them with a gun?  I know quite a few mid-west spearos that put a whippin' on fish out your way.... if you have the vis to stab one from the surface... trust me when I say it's WAAAAAY more fun underwater...  Wink Grin  (I can put you in contact with them if you want)

... otherwise, you could try some hardened tips/threaded tips fitted to a long aluminum blank.

a "paralyzer tip"... real good for gigging

Kind of off topic, but how much Indian do you have to have, and how would you even begin to prove it?

Noah - I'm not sure about the gun thing, I'm kinda into the old school challenge of it, but I've seen guys on the lake using those under water. Are the guns pricy?

tnhillbilly - i'll pm you tomorrow on the details and help you in any way I can. it can be a slow process but it is well worth it in the end. My wife is only 1/32 Cherokee and she got hers, I'm slightly less than 1/2.

Waylon, pm me those eligibility tips as well... I'd dang sure like to follow up on that...

..as for the guns, shoot, you can get a basic gun for under a hundred bucks off of Ebay or you can spend 1500 on a gun like mine... they all kill fish though!!!!

We always made our flounder gigs. I started putting tips for bowfishing arrows on. The best I made had three prongs with the arrow tip on the middle. The tip holds them on and the other one or two stop it from spinning so you can grab it.

This is a short one I made for walk giggin. There is normally hose clamps that hold the all thread to the closet rod, but I think I robbed em for something else!!! You got the idea though.

If you're not into just bowfishing or its too deep then rig a gig up with a bowfishing broadhead. The muzzys have replaceable trocar tips. Just screw the dull one off and put a sharp one back on or if you do serious damage replace the whole broadhead. I dont know anything about that kind of fishing so this info may be crap. I cant see pictures at work either.
