I am new to this forum but have been reading for a while.  I used to hunt central Florida a bit but work took me north.  I have two bmcs from Hutson and so far they are great.  One is going to be put on bear when training season starts.  I will see how things go but I don't think he'll be all that gritty.  We have hounds up here to get to a bear but I want to try the curs for speed and grit.  That said, what do you think is the roughest grittiest BMC?  Something that will really pull hair and get in a mean bears face.  I figure a dog that hates a hog can hate a bear too.

Thanks everyone in advance.

bear dogs can be made into hog dogs more often then hog dogs into bear dogs.

i would never hunt with a stock/hog bred cur for bear, they lack the treeing capabilities. in the mountains when a hog dog trashes on a bear it goes two ways, the bear trees and the cur gets bored at the tree, or the bear doesnt tree and if the cur is rough the dog(s) ends up dead. a fl cur would end up dead. ive caught bears with curs by accident and its not something i would like to do again. maybe a mtn cur or ladner bmc would work, but the way a stock bred cur is designed to work a hog is completely the wrong way to work a bear.

just get a hound from a line that produces alot of gritt. get a crockett plott if you want more gritt.

I agree. any dog that gets into a bears facewill end up dead. If a dog gets catchy on a pig, he can and usually does come out ahead. Not a bear though. A dog that trys to catch a bear like a hog is a dead dog. Remember, they have a whole other set of weapons and they know how to use them.

Thanks for the input.  I have been looking plenty at the plotts, walkers and blueticks.  I just started hunting behind cuts in Florida and am partial to them.  Up in Maine they are few and far between.  One guy has them but I just wanted to see what everyone thought.  Sometimes there is an issue of having bears that won't tree.  That's when some fast gritty dogs might do well in conjunction with some walker and English.  Either way I appreciate the input.

I ran Plotts on bear in MI for years. Yeah some wont tree no matter how rough your dog is. Gets a little scary during the training season when you try to get your dogs off.
