 My black gyp is bred and do in about 5 weeks. I have always heard and been told to hunt a gyp hard and as long as possible when she is bre to make the puppies stronger. I can see the science behind this theory being true but I don't have definitive answers. For all the old timers that have been hunting along time and madelyn breedings. How do you hunt your gyps once they are bred? And have you been able to tell a difference in litters?? I ask old timers bc most likely they will have one gyp that they have bred repeatedly over and can hopefully pull useful data from I understand that nothing will change genetically in the pups but I'm interested in knowing how much stronger or healthier the pups might be from the physical activity put forth from the gyp during gestation. Well i aint no old timer, and dont have alot of experience with breeding, so ill leave your question for the old farts..  But my concern would be her getting hurt... Id hate to see her take a nasty hit from one of them big toothies yall always catch, and possibly loose the pups... With the potential that those pups should have, maybe a nice walk in the park would be enough activity...   |

I reckon I already know the answer to this, but do you have a home for all them pups? Are you planning on sellin any to a hunter in need??? |

She's one of the only ones that usually doesn't get a cut collar. Shr's only got another week or two of hunting, I won't hunt her once she starts showing |

It its got any size or fight to it, she wont hardly get close even when the CD gets there... But once she gets bred, she will probably have a cut collar, vest, 2 garmins, and a cell phone on if i hunt her!!  |

Back when I worked cows with my dogs, I have used some bred gyps when I had too. I never hog hunted any after they were bred because I only bred gyps when I needed replacements. I couldn't take a chance on something happening because I never kept or bred that many and was usually cutting it too close as it was. I could not tell any difference in the pups from the ones I did use.

I'm no old timer but I've always heard that a gyp will "run out of her pups" if she is over worked or over stressed meaning her body will abort the litter. I don't know.  |

Yeah, but the definition of "overworked" is extremely different for that gyp and her cousins. I don't say that rudely, lightly or without justification either. Yeah all it takes is one dumb boar hog Tony. I have enough bad luck with puppies without adding to it. Now if it was coon hunting or maybe cows, it'd be different. You've got to much riding on this litter. You better be out there at night reading bed time stories to them pups, everybody knows that works |

X 20 .....Why would you want to take the risk of losing her and the pups just because of some old timers idea? Bein' as I'm 60 years old, that probably qualifies me as an old timer, or old fart as Trent calls us,  ....as long as a pregnant female gets proper exercize, I can see no reason that hunting her hard during her pregnancy would make the pups stronger....makes no sense to me. What you feed her, seems to me, would have much more influence on the strength of her pups than hunting her while she's pregnant. Heck, half of this stuff you hear from 'old timers' is just crap they've heard from some other 'old timer' anyway.....the Lord gave you sense to use during your time here.....so I say use it. If it seems like it's 'not quite right'.....then there's a reason for that....it isn't! Good luck with your pups bud,.....keep us posted. |

Well its a wives tale but I let a heavy bred gyp bay at the pen a bit outside the fence so she can't get banged up.
Have had to bad of luck with hunting bred gyps especially if she gets her tits cut up and infected prior to having them pups.
Guess it would be compared to the principle of folks reading to unborn children.
Dont know if it made any kind of difference but sure didn't hurt em.
Good looking gyp. Hope she throws plenty of healthy pups for ya and at least one Yeller. Lol

My wife drank milk while she was pregnant. Sure enough, both kids we have like milk. Just saying. Mike said this best. Don't hunt her (until she has weaned the pups) if you want pups from her. |

A buddy of mine had his gyp that was breed get over heated last summer and lost the pups, so just be careful.
