Keeping Pups in my kennels that are on a concrete slab gets messy real quick, so im wanting to move them to a 25x30 kennel which is on the ground. my question is what (if anything) could u put on your grass/ground to prevent puppies from getting parvo? My yard has a history of killing pups do to parvo and I'm curious to see if there's any type of remedy to wipe it out. Thanks

I have seen some kennel sprays that are supposed to kill it and I have heard bleach as well but if it is in the ground I don't understand (or believe) you could saturate the grass enough to penetrate the dirt really well.
Do you have parvo on that part of the yard?

Best thing is to be extremely diligent about vaccinations (on both the bitch and the puppies). People think as long as the puppies are nursing they are protected which is false information. Puppies receive one dose of immunization from the bitch which comes in the form of the mothers colostrum (milk she produces initially after birth). If the bitch wasn't vaccinated properly prior to whelping, the pups won't receive much in the way of resistance.

I've only had this kennel setup in this location for about a year & this is my first set of pups to attempt to raise on them... I'm gonna call my Vet too But I usually ask ETHD first, lol....

IMOi raise all my pups on the ground . i also keep the mother with them until their first shot . worming them every 2 weeks from birth with Nimex.. i hit the mother good with wormer and heart worm before breeding too .. never had a problem until this year .. the only difference was the gyp stayed on her chain in the yard with the other dogs , i usally keep the gyp on a chain in the back the house .. keeps her stress down i find .. but this year i saved one off a litter of 8 due to a new strain of parvo "from what my ole man said" hits the real early and you see no side effectes to catch it in time . one day the pups are all fat , hydrated & health , the next day they dropping off like flies ! if i was you , knowing you've had parvo in the yard already i wouldn't put'em down until you give them their first set of shots .. and once you do , keep it clean ..

bosshog, if you have access to a pto driven tiller for a tractor, till the ground up and spary it with bleach and then till it agian. the virus cant survive the bleach or direct sunlight. by tilling it up you bring the virus to the top, then spraying the fresh tilled soil will kill the virus and then till the dirt again and let it get exposed to sunlight and may even spray the ground again with bleach. iv talked to several vets that sunlight kills it and same with bleach.

If the litter means anything, build a raised wood kennel. 200-300 is cheap price to pay to protect the pups.

Bleach the area with at least 10-1 solution of bleach a few times then coat the area with diatomatous earth (check spelling) Shots the mother before shes bred andor shortly after pups shot we been using the vanguard plus from the vet and repeat 5-6 weeks then 8 weeks and 11 weeks the shot should be givin in 3 week intervals stay to this religeously dont buy into wait till they are 7-8 weeks old
we had parvo a few years back and stick to this routine and have had not problems I pray that the drought and heat burnt the scurge from the ground
this is the reason puppies wont leave here til 12 weeks of age they have had all the puppy shots other than rabies Dexter

My concrete kennels are pretty big, and at 5 weeks and up its a real pain in the rear-end to keep clean, three times a day. That concrete is how I am able to view every pile of POOP. Thats when I know puppies are "Off" first signs of sickness shows in loose stool. I NEED CONCRETE.
I take my puppy raising real serious but I only do once maybe twice a year, because its such a pain. However if they are in the dirt you wont know when you got mucos, or little blood in the stool, and thats super important to know IMO

we till the ground between every litter, however I have switched to above ground. I am just going to plant grass everywhere else. I figure this will save time and money, and puppy lives by just switching to a sterile above ground system.

All of my pups are raised in above ground kennels. I always feed the pups first as not to carry any contamination from the older dogs to pups. Also clean water and pens are a must.
