open 2 or 3 times when they locate a hot track and then shut up and go...this lets me know they are fixing to bay...and the 2 or 3 barks brings in the rest of the pack...

Training dogs is not about quantity, it's more about timing, the right situations, and proper guidance...After that it's up to the dog... A hunting dog is born not made...

Just hunt with some dogs, and buy the one that produces hogs consistently, open or silent.
If I had a choice Though, silent all the way.

Check the search thread, there are some heated arguments/opinions on other silent vs. open threads.

If a dog has it in him/her to find and bay hogs then it will produce hogs for you. It's hard to find goood dogs. One mans trash is another mans treasure and to each his own. But I don't care if they are wide open every 5 seconds if I know they are gonna bay a hog at the end of that track. JMO

x2 if they produce hogs at the end of the day who cares ive seen open dogs produce just the same or better than silent dogs its all your opinion but dont pass up a good dog that produces because people say has to be silent to produce because that is 100% false

Open dogs scare the hogs, makes them run further faster Is there a "stir the pot" smiley? I agree with what others have said, I have hunted behind some really good open dogs, but prefer silent. When I started hunting with friends we had no tracking units so an open dog helped.

I was always a silent dog guy til I got a plot puppy. Now he's 18 mos old. I am liking the open mouth a little. He opens when he strikes then just locates every so often then when he looking he sounds like he's got his balls hung on barbed wire fence. It's the longest bawl I've ever heard with a little chop between. Its easy for other dogs to locate him. Long as they don't just babble every breath on track and are quiet in the box I'm good with it.
