Pup coming back after scare?

Hey y'all, need opinions cuz I've about had it.

Got 2 of grace's pups that I've been working with. They are both 11 months. Paige, doing awesome. Skipper flat said she impresses him. Posie, not so much. Took her the the bay pen the first time, she bayed her arse off just like her sister, had one hog thump her once, she went right back to him. Took her last week, nothing. Wouldn't even look at a pig. Tried everything including a squealing shoat and 2 other dogs, including Paige (they've never spent a day apart since birth).

I know that one of her brothers already died on a pig, and another is making a good help dog, and after seeing her the first time I'm reluctant to give up on her, but at the same time she just didn't even seem interested this last time. I would have settled for at least a sniff, but she literally hung out either behind me or on the opposite side of the pen. Does not make any sense after seeing her hate a pig the first time at the pen.

What do y'all think? Try a few more times, or cull?

try a few more times, could be a really slow starter, did you over work her the last time? keep her in her kennel for a but and let her listen to the dogs work, if it was me i would do a mock hunt with some pups and keep her on a lead and when the dogs get the pig see what her reaction is

Matt, first time I took her to a pen, she only saw 2 pigs for about 3 mins each. I don't have the places to hunt, so I just bay pen. I don't think I over worked her with just 6 mins total on 2 different hogs but I could be wrong.

What puzzles me is that when she got hit the first time, she went back for blood. But when I got there this last time she was terrified of a 5 lb shoat even with two other dogs on it and it squealing to be the drum...

Ill give you my dilema and see if it relates.  My pup wouldnt do nothin with the first one he saw, til he got run over.  now everytime he sees one he looks at it like a monkey doin a math problem, til he gets run over.  Little hard headed i guess.  of course i have to give him a love tap before and after i put him in the box to get him to act right.. His momma did drop him a few time    Guess what im gettin at is maybe she needs to get run over again to get that fire lit.

I see what you talkin about, but that little shoat did work her over, he wasn't big enough to actually hurt anything, couldn't really even make her sore, he was bout the side of a 6 week old pup, and she didn't want no part of him.

One thing u could try is put couple dogs in ther that will bay and keep her on the outside and see if she willl do anything. It may work or may not but its worth a shot

It was only her second time in the pen. She is obviously out of good blood. 11 months, sure you would like her to be jam up but dogs are like people in some ways and we forget that sometimes. Maybe she was having a bad day, just felt lazy, tummy not right, any number of things. Of course it's a possibility she's not what her sister is but don't give up on her just yet.

I've got some full brothers that are workin' like this and are about the same age. Got one that I got backed up and been workin' him with looser dogs hopin' he don't get too catchy and has been doing great since he was 9 months old. His brother on the other hand was either all about catching or didn't want to do anything at all. Got whooped off the ear by a 200 lber and I thought I ruined him. Had a shoat out and stuck it in his kennel with him. prolly 20 lb shoat. Bayed like there was no tomorrow. I've never seen this dog bark. He's prolly gonna turn back around on me and I might like him. lol They are 13 months old now and one has just been a lil slower then the other. Just happens. wish they were all like my 2 yr old and start when they are 7 months and finding their own at 12 months but those dogs are one in a million i've found out.

I'd keep working with her. heard of some people not starting dogs til they were 15 months or so. Ain't sure why but i'll give them to 15 months to show me something or they ain't going to be around nor on the dog trade lol

Kevin, I really am not sure about the blood. I own her Momma, and know what her parents are, which is some really good blood, but the male dog was a black mouth cat cross that a fellow ETHD member found almost dead on an oilfield pad. Garin's story is really sad, and ended way to soon, but he quickly became one of my best dogs before I lost him.

Makes me cry just thinking about him still.

Dogs are strange creatures Meagan,....no two are exactly the same....ever. We can speculate and try to figure out what might work on any given dog....but when it comes right down to it.....you just never know until you give it time. If you like this dog and want to keep it....give her time and a chance to mature a bit. Watch her very closely, and since you seem to me to be able to 'read' an animal pretty well....you can tailor a plan for this dog....but that's just my advice for what it's worth, good luck regardless.

I would kennel her a while don't show a pig to her then throw her in with some dogs on a bigger pig people around 150lb sow so it can beat her up but not hurt her.

I had a dog that was a bad a.. Pup that would bay the the crap out of a mean Barr pig then I put her up for deer season and  showed her a pig bout a month ago and she did nothing on the outside the I was like what the heck might as well put her in there for alittle while. I chuncked her in nothing happens. Well I said I'll try to hunt her n see what she does come to find out she doesn't bay in a pen but she will bay the hair off a pig in the woods


also would be another thing to consider maybe the pig is too little that she looses interest in it if you get a good size one with some grit maybe she will stay on her toes
