Why not just lead catch dogs around untill you stumble on some hogs and then turn them loose? Its The same reason people that bay and shoot hogs use bay dogs. To find the hogs and bay them up.
3. those who shoot hogs......why bring the dogs?
Here's the reason....The dogs are a guarantee, a means of making the job more efficient and a greater sucess. I can't cover 1000 acres in a morning and be sure I did'nt miss any hogs without dogs on the ground hunting. I could maybe cover a hundred acres without dogs and be sure I did'nt miss any hogs but thats all and it would'nt cut it. When my uncle (or any other farmer for that matter) calls and says he has hogs in his corn, I'll think "allright its gonna be 95 degress tomorow and I gotta hual hay too but I'll be there before the sun comes up and hopefully be done before it gets much above 85 degress if it ever even gets below that. I can hual hay in the heat. So I don't have time to figure out by my self where the hogs are(thats why I use dogs), and I dont have time to mess with tied hogs and bring them out allive because usally I have something else to do after I get through hunting (Thats why I dont dont usally use catch dogs). To me, catch dogs are a hastle, and catching hogs is more of a hastle than a challenge. I've had catch dogs before......they don't live long, and they tend to make my Cur dogs not live as long. My Cur dogs are a tool and hard to replace, so I intend to keep them around as long as I can so I leave the catch dogs allone. Not that they are bad, Most of my buddies run catch dogs and If I hunt with them I'll be legging hogs but I don't prefer that method when I'm trying to tend to business. However, I do beleive if you catch a hog you might as well tie it if circumstances allow, because why catch a hog if you just wanna kill it? Its my dogs job to find the hogs and keep them bayed so its easy for me to walk up and shoot em. Thats why I (and other people) shoot over bay dogs. Does that answer you question? Try it some time its more of a challenge than you think because the dogs actually have to have the hog bayed and they are'nt always in pleasant surroundings.

Wmwendler, Nothing wrong with shooting hogs over dogs in my book. You still have to have good dogs to find em and bay em! Its all about a good find/bay dog for me anyway and guns, knives, and catch dogs are just the means to finish the hunt. I use all three. It just depends on the circumstance Im hunting in. A savvy hog hunter with good dogs and a handy rifle is definitely the most effective way to eradicate a large number of hogs were its required and allowed in my opinion though.
Ive hunted for ranchers and farmers in the past that have demanded we shoot the hogs or we couldn't hunt. More recently Ive hunted for land owners that wouldn't allow firearms to be used so out comes the catch dogs.
What ever the circumstances may be a catch dog, a knife, or a rifle just ain't to effective without those good find/bay dogs are they?

Something about haveing a gun and light on their property they dont like? !!! Cant blame em there's also Something about a good find/trail dog that WILL stop a hog and hold it till you get their and soon as you leg it their off to find another just gets my blood pumping !!!! I have delt with the bulldogs and gritty jug headed cur dogs, i was young then, that was what everyone wanted !! the baddest catch dog!! now that i think about it i coulda caught way more hogs and spent way less time fixxen dogs on the tail gate if id'a listen to them ole timers and got me one or two good bay dog's!!! that will catch when you get there or one good listenin find/catch dog!!!!

I have not used a catch dog in three years and have had more big hogs around 270 lbs hogs caught than most around here with bulldogs and I dont even like to catch them cause to me 25 cents a pound aint worth the time . I use all cur dogs now I got a bulldog for the corn cause I dont like running threw the corn for a 1000 acres . We shoot over our dogs , we tie hogs when we want to if we decide we want to sell them are use them in a pen , we stab hogs when we want to , we hunt to eat hogs when we want to are a buddy are a friend needs the meat , we kill them and leave them lay also if we are trying to help a farmer clean his crops out . Its all a matter of what your doing and how you are doing it and there is differnt circumstances for differnt times . I am not gonna carry a 250 lb boar hog for three miles before I can get him on my four wheeler for nobody .
Anybody says any differnt and they have not done it all these differnt ways has not been a hog hunter very long and might need to get off the internet a while and get in the woods.
There is not a thing wrong with anyway a man wants to do it . Tie , Catch, Shoot, Stab, bring them out a live are let them lay. One way don't make you are your dogs anybetter than anybody else. I hear and see this all the time its a bunch of BS if you think just because you tie a hog it makes you better are your dogs.

I have done all three.....In Florida as a youngster we stuck everything.....when I work on a ranch in North Georgia we shot them because we used our cow dogs to find the hogs. And I have caught and tied for the better part of my hog hunting experience. If people on here would read the whole post they might not get their feel goods hurt. I was simply making a point as to how many directions that particular post could have gone.....if you get your thrill out of sticking or shooting a hog.....get after it.....hog hunting is a hobby for enjoyment...there is no need for the peeing contest.....or the macho attitudes on this site.......seriously.......my dogs find hogs, I catch hogs.....I don't care how you do it unless you are hunting with me.......that is why I hunt with the 4 guys I hunt with...we all have a common method of catching hogs...... But to call me out and start a thread about something trivial like this....when there are guys posting about dogs getting killed or cut up on a PUBLIC forum.....yeah that makes those animal rights folks feel good about what they do.....how bout y'all call those guys out.....

That is fact sir.......you might need to rethink your hunting methods!!!!!! I have caught hogs in 6 different states bud.....so you moving isn't going to help......and it has nothing to do with the dogs Mr. "Texas Hog Dogs"......it is the method of using those dogs......you don't take 4 gritty dogs hunting together...you take 1 gritty dog and 2-3 not so gritty dogs...but y'all MACHO guys think this is a bad man contest...that is why you get dogs killed.......I understand there are freak accidents that happen...I sir have not had that happen to me....but for the most part it is misuse of your dogs.....

Wow! Might be a good idea to lock or remove this post, can't see it going in a good direction any time soon. As far as hunting methods, I'm pretty sure i can attest to what Pecos meant, in saying that there is nothing wrong with stabbing, shooting or catching the hog to 'finish' the hunt. We have had to stab some ourselves. We have never carried firearms when we hunt, but mainly due to the fact that most of my hunting places i have a previous agreement with the landowners. I am a bowhunter and the places i get permission to bowhunt deer usually give me the same permission to hunt hogs with dogs. On these places i always guarantee no firearms. It does depend on the hunting situation and the demands of the landowner as well(as on some places you go, they say they better be dead on the trailer when you pull off the property). Now just stating known facts for anyone questioning some previous statements... As long as I have hunted with Pecos, we've caught hundreds of hogs and we have NEVER had a dog get killed by one. The closest one ever came was a strike dog that wasn't gritty that got into an odd situation and got pinned by a hog breaking a bay. It was not a gritty dog trying to catch or a catch dog or a dog getting cut after a catch dog caught. To add to this, the last few hogs we've caught have had some pretty rough cutters, including one that had matching set of 3+ inches. We did not have even a scratch on ANY dogs including the Catch dog. There are times that dogs get cut, but I promise you that the way you hunt will determine how many dogs you have getting doctored up after the hunt. We start our hunts with a prayer that include '... and thank you God that we won't have injury to Man or Dog...' mebbe that is part of it too Using the ole' brain God gave us to be smart about how we hunt falls right in line with that prayer. Again, use whatever method you can to get the job done. Some methods are more challenging whether you see it that way or not. Some methods can't be used due to restrictions of landowners or lack of having a catchdog or whatever. The main thing here is that we keep this sport going and we STICK TOGETHER and not fight amongst ourselves on a message board. Divide and conquer is what the enemy is trying to do to us. DON'T DO IT TO OURSELVES AND MAKE IT EASY FOR THEM! Mav

Pecos......The post was directed to you, but I was not trying to call you out or start trouble. You posted the question why use dogs if you use guns? I was'nt sure what you meat but I was simply explaining why, to you or anyone else that might not understand it. If you allready knew thats great. Sorry if my post seemed different than what I meant.
Consider yourself lucky that you have never lost a dog in 25 years. Hunting just bay dogs helps allot but even still It does and will happen to me. I've had some luck in the recent past we've had a few close calls but saved them at the vet.

This is a dogs on hogs forum for hunters. Your comment is referring to most every member on this forum...... - 1. Every person has their own method and style of hunting. To each his own. 4th.....if you would rread my first post......the comment about leaving the EGOS in the dog box....you might want to put a lock on the door of your dog box so it doesn't get out!!!

Hey Pacos 21, I understood your point in your 1st post as well and had a good laugh at the humor you cleverly put in it! Just dint figure it was my place to further explain it since it was posted directly at you. Yeah and your are full of Chit is what you are !

Post something like that and then say as you put it "Am not going to get into a big hoop lie on here". Its real hard to respond to that without getting confrontational. Bad form Sir. I know hog hunters like Pacos21 that live in Texas and have been doing it even longer that haven't had a single dog killed so I have to disagree. I wish I was in that category myself! Ive had 2 killed in 23 years and both were crazy circumstances. Contrary to being full of Chit I believe Pacos21 has got a dang good handle on things and in my opinion is definitely a guy you should want to listen to if he ever had something to say about hog hunting and dogs.
