I have noticed here on ETHD that some folks make a distinction when talking hog dogs...I have seen where someone will say I have a strike dog and a bay dog for sale...or I have a bay dog for sale...

To me a strike dog is a bay dog...and then we have the "me too" dogs that don't really hunt on their own but will go step for step with a strike dog...that is as long as the strike dog is running he will run and bay also and this dog should be able to help in stopping/catching the hog...a me too dog might be a better bay dog than a good strike dog but I would take the strike dog any day...

Then we have dogs that are unbeatable bay dogs in the bay pen but will not run with the strike dogs but want to hang around...that to me is a cull...

So how do you see it???

To me strike dogs and find dogs are the same. They can bay a hog. A dog that hangs around until another dog finds and bays a hog is worhtless to me. Only dog that I want hanging around my feet is a bulldog.
I have dogs that hunt better when they are with other dogs. But not the same dog will bay first everytime.

If they cant strike a hog, they cant bay a hog. "In the woods"
My own personal opinion is if I lived down there and had the hogs ya'll do AIN'T NO WAY I would feed a dog that couldn't find a hog or wouldn't hunt.
If a dog cant run its own track by a yr old around here they don't last long.
Ya'll hunt however and whatever you want, your buying the feed and if your dogs suit you thats all that matters. But it ain't for me.

I agree...the pack should be evolving to a higher level of performance...

A "strike dog" IS a bay dog......A "bay dog" is not always a "strike dog",AND TO ALL THE BADASSES out there that "wont keep a dog around that dont strike their own hog" send one to me,i could use a dog that will honor a bay and help my strike dog out when he does his job,I feel there is a place in any pack for a good help dog.

I had never seen the term strike dog until we found this forum. What people refer to as a strike dog is what we always called a bay dog. So to me they are the same.

A bay pen dog is different than a bay dog to me.

In our pack we have bay dogs and catch dogs.

When you ask the men I grew up around about a dog and they said he was a cow dog, hog dog, coon dog or whatever, you knew he had earned the title. That meant he had no major faults and could be relied on to get the job done start to finish. If you asked about a dog and they went to telling you how he did things, they were fixing to tell you about his faults. Thats the way I wish it still was.

It's not being a badass, it's just having standards and making sure they're met.  Dogs are tools in a sense, and to do a good job, you should have the best there is.

I agree... I want them to be able to find their own, and if another dogs strikes they should honor it unless they are on their own track..

IMO, a strike dog shouldnt need much help... It should be able to find, bay, stop, or stick with a hog on its own...   Wink

My standards are exactly why I'm having to breed dogs and raise puppies, Because you can't just buy these type of dogs unless you're lucky, and it's also why i only have two dogs older then a year on my yard.  It's a rough life for a hog dog around here.

Since i was little i have always known a strike dog as one that finds its own pigs and stops them and will help after bulldogs get there. To be honest when i look for a strike dog i dont want a real gritty one. I i pay good money for a bad a$$ strike dog or if i train them the way i want i dont want to have to worry about every hunt them gettin cutt down. Then all i have put in goes to waste. Yes i know its part of hunting but id any day rather have a jam up strike dog that will get out and hunt hard find his own pigs stop them and keep em stopped till my big bulldogs get there. No need to try and cstch or pressure them to much. Everyone talks about how there hogs run and run amd run. That rarely happens with me and the people i hunt with. We have 1-2 damn good strike dogs and they dont pressure the hog. we dont have help dogs that will show up 2 min after the hog is stopped and barrel in and make the hog run. Its just 1-2 jam up strike dogs they bay till bulldogs get there amd by tje time the bulldogs get there ots all over. If they help cstch after bulldogs cool if not id have em roll out and have another track by the time hog is dead or hobbled. Everyone does it different tho. Where i am from strike and bay both find hogs but bay dont cstch.

It was the exact same for me, i hunted for a couple years before i found this site and i'd never heard of a strike dog before.

......i have hogdogs (sometimes) lol
