Dogs so good that they are not available to anyone?

I know of a "old timer" that thinks so highly of his line of dogs, he does not make them available to anyone except his very closest friends. I was very suprised when he told me that he would let my cat gyp be bred by his best male. The agreement was, he gets first pick and all dogs must stay with me or him.
Any of you know people like this?

Yes I do. Most of my husbands relatives are the same way. They mostly only give a dog to a relative but if they think highly enough of you to give you a dog then its an automatic rule: if for any reason you decide that you dont want the dog then it goes back to the original owner. If its a pup and its not turning out the way you like, you give them the option to take it back before its culled.
This way the blood lines are protected from being diluted and it keeps the blood line alive in case a pack gets wiped out by a bad hog.

I know a fellow that is pretty much the same way. He is real funny about his "best" blood getting out. He prefers to sell dogs with only a 1/4 of his "best" blood in them. He bred his very best dog (male) to a friends dog and I am supposed to get a dog from that litter. The fella with the male wasn't real happy about me gettin a pup and I know him fairly well. I'm obviously excited.

Yea we know lots of people like that with great lines, and almost all arnt on this website. They are a different breed of men and it takes alot of hard work and trust to break those inner circles and get your hands on one. Luckily there are still people out there like this. It keeps the good lines, GREAT and out of the publics hands so the watering down by breeding mediocre dogs like ALOT of people on this site do doesn't happen!

Man tony! What are you trying to say? I know yalls dogs are pretty talented, but just imagine what you might end up with if you bred those bitches to the dogs of everybody who offered? Lil pit, lil foundation bmc, lil bloodhound and maybe some jagd, I mean you guys might really have something if you wouldn't be so stingy.
I think everybody oughta be that " ol timer". I honestly don't mean to sound snobby because I'm a LOOOONG way from where I hope to be, but I'll say I've hunted with several dogs of just about all breeds and crosses who have my utmost respect and maybe even a but of envy, BUT, I wouldn't want to breed to them. Not because I find any fault at all, but because they may not fit the big picture I've got in mind, or because itd take to long to narrow the genetics back down to what I was after in the first place.
Don't be offended by the ol feller, if you like his dogs, do everything your able to get in his good graces and even if it doesn't get you his line, it WILL raise your standards of what's worth raising.

Haha yeah L3 had everyone and their mamma wanting to start using Great Danes, maybe that's what we need to breed into our dogs
Well said T-Bob, it's all about standards and what you are striving to accomplish.. Some people are happy with a kennel full of Volkswagon Beetles and Ford Echo's... I'd rather have kennels full of Ferrari's and Aston Martin's.
It's not something that happens overnight though, work hard and do right by the old timers you are trying to get in with. Eventually you'll get your hands on one of those pups and you'll never look back

Lmao.. My point exactly! Why ruin a good thing?? The old timers in their graves would roll over and come haunt us if we took their working stock, cur dogs and started crissing them over danes. Not sure that adding Dane to the dogs we hunt would benefit us at all
And the lines this thread is talking about don't need a Dane added to them, if they didn't already do their job they wouldn't be so highly regarded and wouldn't exist bc the old timers didn't feed help dogs or dogs that didn't get the job done.

I think way too many people breed now a days. Very few dogs are worth breeding . We would have less culls and less attention on us as doggers . I bet that is one reason some lines are kept close. Also people are competitive by nature. If You had some good dogs, would you want everyone around you to have them?

I used to be this way...not even talked about how I bred my dogs...but at the end some folks didn't like a dog that would run for hours to put a hog at the other end...and if the dog opens some...well to some it is a cull no matter how quick said dog can find a hog or stop it...
what some old timers believe to be a great line of dogs does not necessarily mean the line will be appreciated by the average dogger...

Holy crap bro, great minds think alike and I guess even minds like ours too.
The competitiveness is the way I feel. I've got friends who I feel have very good dogs and I always feel like the kid playing catch up. Why would I finnaly have a comparable set of dogs and say ok sure let's spread the genetics around to the point where I go back to being the dummy with the second fiddle dogs all the time.
I'm not saying what I got is first rate mind you, just saying I finally feel like I've got a girl to bring to the prom and I ain't lettin y'all dance wit her!
