I have a friend that has a friend that is hiring for a crew that works on powerlines down in Conroe area. Does anyone know anything about Chain Electric or anything about powerline jobs? The money sounds good, but being away form the family would be tough. Leave on Sunday come back on Thursday. I'm just having a tough time wrapping my head around not being able to see my 2 year old daughter every night...

I am in the same boat just going the other way. You do what you gotta do to take care of your family. I am taking the job in Dallas if they ever call with the final say but I will keep looking for work in the Houston area. The good thing for me is that I have been trying to get out of this subdivision life for a few years now and get on a piece of land. I will have to head out every Sunday night before kids go to bed and come back Friday night after they are in bed. I will only get one night to give those kids a hard time.

I traveled some working when my kids were younger and quite honestly in hindsight they never knew about the nominal increase in pay and Solent have cared either. All it really did was raise the bar for my minimum income and created more bills. Money earned is money spent in most cases. One thing you can't buy or replace with any amount of money is time at home with the family. Especially kids. My oldest daughter is about to leave for college and I couldn't feel more guilty for the time I spent away from her working when she was younger. They did a slide show for each senior during graduation and I was only in one picture.. I used to envy men that earned good money and now I respect men that can find the balance between good earning and family time. Your thinking is good about your daughter. Not that traveling is bad but there is a balance. Jmho

Thanks guys! That's the battle I am having... Most of the jobs that pay really good are out of town. I am having a hard time justifying not being at home with my family, and esspecially when I know the money is going to be spent either way. I am just trying to get out of debt, and doing it check to check, or more like overdraft to overdraft isn't working very well...

Money doesn't matter at all if I don't see my family.  I've quit a job because my daughter didn't know who I was because I was working all the time.  When they get older they won't remember how much money you made but if you were there for them.  Just my .02

X2 the only way I could work out of town and not see my girls is if it was the only job I could find. My dad worked to much when I was a kid. I never knew him very well and it even effects us to this day. My girls are my reason to wake up at 4 every morning I would go crazy if I could see them everyday.

Thanks guys... turns out that it is only for 14 bucks an hour with the ability to get a raise every 6 months, and thats not worth the stress to me. So thanks for the input and I'm right there with ya'll... My daughter is the light in my life, and without here around all the time it would be really dark.

My husband is having a hard time dealing with it. It might b ok now, but wait till they want to do the rodeo or play baseball, or go fishin.  You can't cause your not there.  It was fine b4 we had kids.  Now we hae two boys 4 and 3 and momma just ain't cutting it anymore.  They want their daddy.  Good luck with your decision.  But b sure to weigh out the pros and cons.  Yes the money is good, but is the money worth never seeing your baby or your wife?  Good luck.

Ryan, my son is just starting his power lineman training. Takes about 9mnths to get through his classes and then he can start out around 40-50 grand. Not bad for a 19 year old kid. His instructor told him flat out in the beginning (you will live on the road)! Not much way around it for those guys if they wanna make the bucks. I worked that way once while I was raising my kids and the money just wasn't worth it. Like that other guy said, I just spent more !

The money sounds great, but not the distance from the wife and daughter. I'd love to be able to make it happen, but gotta stick to what I have for now until God presents me with another option. I just can't hardly stand being away from them like I am already much less doing it for days on end. I would miss so much with my little girl if I were to take an out of town job. Thanks for the comments guys and gals! I appreciate the input!

Ive been thinking about changing jobs as well... Looking at taking a course to go to work on a rig...
Several guys I know that got the training are making about $100,000 a year work 2 weeks on 2 weeks off...

Right now im working 7-3 and home every night, but making just enough to cover the bill i have...

The way Im looking at it is that i can work for 2 weeks, and spend the other 2 weeks off with the family and have time and money to buy what we want and go on vacations and trips that we cant afford to do right now..  and of course plenting of hunting trips!!   Grin

Now a job working away every week, that wouldnt cut it...

That's not a bad idea Trent... Keep me updated on what you have to do to get trained and hired.

I hunt with a guy that took the course and is currently working in the field... Im still trying to find out more info on it to make sure its something I would want to do... I know it cost about 9 grand to take the 2 month course, and they had jobs waiting on them when they got out...   Wink

Ryan & dub, u two need to change info on the job prospects...cuz dub lives close to where ryan's possible job is & ryan lives close to where dub may have a job. so each of you take the others job and then you'll both be close to home and be able to go home each nite...  of course this is all dependent on you two being qualified for the "others" job...
