Had something happen last night that I had never seen before with the dogs I've been hunting with.  Ran up on a group of pigs in wheat field that had just been combined, long story short had a bay 75 yds from where we turn out and it broke, hogs hit the woods and the chase was on.  Messed with them for about 30 mins and My catahoula would never bay solid but would give a bark every 10-15 seconds, got within 19 feet of him on the Garmin and still I couldnt see anything or him because of the briars.  He comes popping out next to me and shoots up my trail 10 feet and stands on his back legs and is just staring into the briars I take one step towards him and I can see the top of the pigs head, my dog never barked when we were right there, I threw my pit at the pig and we catch and stick it.  My question is though, me and RileyG have loose baying dogs and they hammer down on a hog.  Why would he not hammer down on this pig?  I've never seen it happen before, it was about 85 lastnight and Ive hunted in hotter temps but idk what else it would be, he was completely worn out as were the rest of the dogs.  Has it ever happened to anyone?  Input or suggestions as to what it may be would be appreciated, I just thought it was weird.

I've had my dogs run a hog for over an hour one summer morning and finally shut it down and by the time we made it to them they were laying down baying on the edge of a tree line only barking  a bark or two every now and them so it is possible that's what happen!

Was the dog by itself? Because I have a gyp that bays hard with other dogs but if she is alone just lets out an occasional bark like you said, and I had the same thing happen with her and a briar bush, the hog in the bush was god awful rank and could smell him but never see him and my gyp was just running circles around the outside

Yes, our dog Red was after a hog one time. It was in warm weather. The chase had lasted for a long time. Same thing, the garmin showed him bayed and we heard him bark a few time and then it went quiet. We headed towards him and every now and then he would bark. It was weird.

We found both him and a little hog laying in the edge of the water in a creek, both panting hard and the only time that he would bark is when the pig would move. LOL As long as the pig lay still, he just layed there with it.

Well, there were two other dogs with him for awhile, but they came back to us even still, Ive heard him hammer down by himself too several times.  I just thought it was weird.  I had never seen it happen before.  When I say our dogs are loose baying I mean, no catch what so ever until the catchdogs are there.  This pig weighed maybe 50 ibs and he never even tried it.  So he bays hard all the time.

I have a dog that will run one a ways and if its been a long time before we get there he will lay down and when he hears us he will start barking.  But when we shut the scooters off he will stop. You have to talk to him and he will start again.  Just has to know that you are there.

Maybe he tried hammering down and the hog ran every time. Then your dog was smart enough to change his style a little and the pig stayed put. I have seen dogs adapt to a pig. Never not bark at all but if the dog had the pig stopped and not moving that counts Grin
