In your minds eye...what is the perfect hog dog??? I want a good description so that I can visualize what you are saying... Some of you will say a dog that catches and produces the pork...so there...I said it for you I am not talking about a catch dog...I am talking about a strike dog...

My Perfect Dog Appearance Red brindle with a high flank and long legs and ears. Around 40/45 pounds.
Hunt I want a dog that is high energy that can go as long as I wanna go that hunts a good med/long range if it has to and have plenty of bottom to stay with a hog as long as it takes for me to get there. I like a dog to be able to wind and run a track. I don't want a dog running a day old track though. I like a dog with enough power to stop a hog but enough sence to step back and bay. I like to hunt with 5 dogs on the ground but I don't like them to pack hunt I want them to hunt on their own but honor the others bay.

Don't care if they can strike a hundred in a day, if they can't stop and hold them, they are worthless to me.

What I said on CWards post, I love runners, and add hard hunting, cold nosed track drivers with deep bottom.

One who I wouldn't be able to describe as short, medium or long ranged, but simply effective. One who isn't lazy or hyper but lives in a state of alertness, by this I mean aware of his environment and paying attention to the details of his day. One who thinks rather than just smells. He should use his nose, eyes, ears and memories to locate quarry. One who is blazing fast. Not just wide open run fast but is on track in any terrain with head up and eyes forward looking at obstacles while processing the trail and knows how to use the wind currents to identify not where the quarry has been, but where they are and may be headed. Once game is reached this dog should work them however the situation justifies, meaning bringing it to a stop and keeping it there. This in my mind does not mean "making sure the hog is scared to run" so much as making the hog feel comfortable to stand where it is. It seems like I'm just mincing words but I'm not, there's a difference. This dog should roll out when the hog is handled and go on to the next if there was more, if not they may or may not go hunt one up. ( trusting in the dogs discretion) They should be geared towards a relationship with the handler and feed off of his or her cues wether verbal, physical or subconscious ( I know I'm starting to lose some of y'all now. ) There's a lot more but it's back to work for me now. They don't have to be a hard hunting as you'd think to "put on a show" when they have the ability and the desire

It is the dog someone else owns. Because I don't have one. Now if I could hunt behind one and someone else feeds it then that makes it better. I have heard about them but I ain't seen one. It seems to me to be a dog with flaws the owner don't see. Now I have seen some real good dogs (not mine) but perfect just don't happen in the real world. So I don't waste my time looking for perfect just what makes me happy. If you have something completely different and it makes you happy then I ain't gonna knock it. Hound, Cur, Cat, or whatever I might talk some smack if I think you won't get too upset.
Really it comes down to getting the pork, the dog doesn't annoy you, and you don't mind feeding it. You can out every good or bad in one of those slots. They go in the order too. Finding pork is number one and I don't care how they find and stop the pig. Number too is all about personality to me and if I don't like a dog then I don't want it around. Then this is a cold hard world and I can only feed so many dogs. So they my find pork and not annoy me but when the numbers are stacked they may get pushed out because I just don't want to feed them. Those dogs are easy to find a home and may fit in with someone else that hunts different.

Long legged, streamlined, athleticaly built. Good sense in and out of the woods with a good handle. Independent as a hermit. Doesn't require any other dog or...you for that matter to go hunt. (Hunts for himself) Fast and articulate with a track. Doesn't blow past them without noticing and taking the time to work it out. Determination and bottom (to a point) have owned some zero quit robots in the past and it gets old after eight or nine hours. Rough when they need to be and loose when it's called for. Check in periodically but only by passing through at a high trot. (Never walking behind you) Non dog or people agressive. Unless I sic him on ya. Lol And most important part. (YELLER BLACKMOUTH) or disregard anything listed above.

he will be any early starter...this pup will be the pick from 8 weeks because he is head and shoulders above his siblings...the first time in the woods this pup will make a good loop and he will be in a smooth gallop with his head held high looking from side to side. he hits the slough without hesitation and charges ahead and swims to the other side... he can take a track at 6 months old, no problem... and can smell a track that even the best strike dogs can not or will not start...
This young dog at a year to 14 months is a dog that can compete with the very best of the strike dogs...he can make it look easy to find a hog...if the hog sign is fresh enough I guarantee a strike...when he first locates a good track he barks three times and then shuts up, he cuts and slashes, drifts on track and will even make a big half circle to locate the hot end of the tracks... and he will be bayed while the other dogs are still trying to work out the feeding tracks...he runs the track with his head up and looking for the game he is trailing...this dog is always trailing ahead of the pack...did it at 10 weeks of age with his litter-mates when testing... and does it in the field at 7 years of age...he locates with a long bawl and settles to a loud chop...he is good at keeping the hog bayed...he will stick with a runner for hours and has the grit to stop one if he can catch up to him...this dog will not stop and give it up because the brush or the rose hedges are too thick...
This dog is leggy with a powerful build but yet you can see the refinement...He has power, speed, and lots of heart...he does not start a fight but will not cower down from one. I like them about 55-60 pounds, dark yellow to a dark yellow reddish color with dark pigment and dark eyes...also a good length of ear but it breaks over even with the top of the skull.
This dog is one you will remember and one of those you call once in a lifetime dogs. He is smart...he is not hyper...because the great dogs are not hyper...those that don't know dogs will call him lazy...but he is far from lazy...he is laid back but he is intense...he is independent and will honor a bay...but he strikes 9 out of 10 hogs...as this dog ages he will not hunt as before...but he will make a big loop when the tail gate drops...if he doesn't come back in 10 minutes get ready because he is fixing to bay up...if he comes back you can bet there are no hogs in the vicinity...but when he leaves out you can bet on a bay...
The dog I described I picked out of my back yard as a pup and his name was yeller...smartest dog I ever owned...have had quite a few very good ones since but none like yeller...

I then traded for a full mtn .curr jip ,started her and after two years and lots & lots of hogs a hunter heard a friend brag on her . He did not hesitate when I told him what it would take to buy her . The shame is she was killed two days later. SOO SAD !!!! Imo mtn.cur !!!!

A dog that you can unsnap from his homely chain and walk to the truck without a lead because hes already loaded. A dog that you can open the gate on the box for and he leaves without worrying about what his co-hunters are doing. A dog that doesn't come back till hes made you the center of a 500 yard circle then jumps on the four wheeler or stands there till you walk further and tell him "get ahead" for another 500 yard looksee. When the hog is bayed right where he found it because he did whatever it took to keep him there and I've got my hands on it, I want him to disappear as to not waste any time finding his friends that may have strayed. when its time to go i say "truck" and he loads up on the four wheeler or beats us to the truck on a walk hunt. Was that a dream?
