I do that anyway. I have what I call my time to hunt routine so the dog knows it is time to hunt and not time to play. I start with petting and saying pig over and over. Then I rub the head and say now go get me a pig. There is no petting again until I get a pig or it is time to load up.

I had a gyp that would hunt her tail off but if anyone screwed up at scratched her ear or pet her during the hunt she was done, once you showed her attention she wouldn't even leave the buggy......she was a great dog just couldn't mix play with work lol.

I show my dogs some attention before they start.  I always liked it before competition when I would get a pep talk so why give your dogs one.

Funny Story.

Last night my wife was feeding and my old dog was just laying in the shade not moving.  I asked if he was still alive.  She says " I think so he is breathing".  She says to him. ' Come here, Come here, Do you want some food, Come get some food". Nothing, he was not moving. Then finally she says " want to go get a hog" and boy did he jump up and run to her.   I think he knows what that world means.   Too hot to move EXCEPT when it comes to hogs.

Yes I guess in a weird way I have to rub some of my dogs before they give 100%.
I prefer rubbing my boot to their butt if they are slacking. Haven't tried any of the other methods with much success. laugh

Getting out of the kennel is the only motivation mine need, I do like the boot method when there in the woods though lol

All i gota do is crank the truck and drive around to the pens and they go nuts. I just let em out and they load up. That all motivation they need i reckon. But i will give em a pat on the head before i let em out

If they need more motivation than the natural desire to hunt, then they don't stay here long. I don't praise and beg them to hunt, they either do or they don't. On the other hand, I don't beat or kick a dog for not hunting. That won't make them any more motivated other than to stay out of arms reach when it's time to load up.

The only thing I have seen any of my dogs do is when my Red dog makes a loop and checks in,  sometimes he will walk behind or beside me for a minute until I reach down and pet him. As soon as I do he is off like a rocket again.

got some davis bmc hunt really hard,if they do something wrong you can scold them by yellin at them or catch them and put them in the truck for a little while. if you hit or kick one of them hes done. hell go to the truck will not hunt at all for you. and the only time they usually do something wrong is when i dont put them in a good area to hunt with little sign of pig. they dont hunt to good if im not with them either, let a friend take them for a few days said they hunted ok for him but not like usual guess there one man dogs.           kerry welch 2549675614  or jeanna,welch@yahoo.com
