I use my case double xx "razor" edge. The big one is six in and my short one is three in. Works pretty good till about the third hog. And then you gatta bring out the stone. But if I can get the pig to my shop I ussually cut slits in the skin and hit it with shop air. Seperates the hide from the meat and saves knives and time.

 Don't laugh but since Im not very good at sharpening a knife, I skin a hog using a utility blade.  Grin  Works really good for me. When it gets dull, I just throw a new blade in.

That havalon is a cool knife, but I don't like the idea of throwing a dull blade away. Too much of life nowadays is disposable. But that's just my thoughts

Ive got a Buck with a gut hook.  Its the second one ive owned.  I can get through two hogs with it before i have to sharpen it.  the nice thing about it is it has a lifetime warranty.  The first one i had i had for over ten years, broke the tip tryin to pop the hip joing on a buck years ago. sent it back and they sent me this one.  had it five and so far so goo.

I can sharpen a knife but I'm like the others a folding utility knife is just too simple. I use it just to get the hide off then get my trapper. Picked up a Knife made by Moore. Made in Matador Tx. Well made and the blade will blue in time. It's made on the case trapper model.

Its their money, if they wish to buy a new blade, then thats on them. I do feel folks should learn to sharpen a knife, but if they choose not to and there are alt means out there and they so choose to use it, then cudos for them. I feel if a person is gonna carry the knife, use it and dull it, then they should sharpen it theirselves, but some folks cant keep the same angle of blade to stone every time.

I just got a Mossburg fixed blade with a guthook that i like alot. Light, sharp and holds a good edge and priced right.. Ugly dog has them on their site.

As far back as I can remember as a kid, my dad used a case XX trapper with a carbon steel blade...That is all I ever used until I until I saw my son skin out 3 deer without having to sharpen the blade...he did it with a Gerber that has the gut hook...I read about them and went and bought one...the best thing about them is that they are made in the USA and the price is fair...only thing I don't like about them is the blade is a little thicker than what I like...

I have always liked carbon steel... for me there's something about taking care of a carbon blade...keeping it from rusting, just taking care of it... Cheesy Smiley

I skin a hog using a Case "Muskrat".  Best pocketknife there is for skinning.  Has the same blade on either side, so when one gets dull switch sides and repeat.

The Case CV blades which is carbon vanadium blades is the only way to go.  There is something about the history and the time it takes to get that blade good and dark and it wears down after time which really pits some character in the knife.  You can stick a potato on each blade for about a week and turn both blades dark.

my favorite skinning knife is a buck 694t. out of all the knifes i have used it will stay sharp through a whole hog. My favorite pocket knife is a SOG sogzilla it is a great cheap knife that will get razor sharp.

I take a good gut hook and put just under the hide and run it all the way down the body. Then repeat about 3 or 4 in over .and u can pull the hide all the way down with your hands and leave the fat on it. Just cut in strips all way around it
