If your dogs have a house that's on the ground you better check under it for yellow jackets. Went out to feed the other day and went into Abby's lot to feed her. She's always cuttin' up and running around all excited, runs into and out of her house 3 or 4 times every time I go in to feed her, just part of her routine. After I put her food in the bowl she jerked around and snapped at her butt,...then did the same on the other side.....then I saw the little b*****ds boiling out from under her doghouse,....they ran her into her house and went in after her....she ran out and then back in.....this took place in a matter of seconds. She went back into her house and made her stand,.....she was mad as a wet hen by then.....barking and growling and trying to bite 'em off of her....I threw the gate open and called to her to get her outside the lot, she finally saw me and came running out, she still had 3 on her back bowed up stinging the **** out of her. I get them off of her and she seemed to settle down a bit. I put her in with Belle for the night and watched her to make sure she didn't have a reaction to the stings but she was fine. She got stung at least 12 times, bless her heart she had whelps all over her. She's not a big dog....about 32 lbs. and I have no doubt that if I hadn't been there they would have stung her to death. I went back out after dark and got my revenge though.....raised the doghouse a bit and poured about a cup of gas on the nest......next morning I looked to see how big it was.....about 9 inches across and had about 300 left on it when I gassed 'em. So if your dogs have houses on the ground you better check for yellow jackets before it's too late.....I dodged a bullet this time and I'm thankful I was there when they decided to get rowdy. Most years it's August before I see nests that big with that many on it, seems they're early this year.
