Im working at a vet clinic now, and nearly everyday a dog is brought in needing a home. There is a beautiful pit female that is free that i love. She is 2.5 yrs old but has never seen a hog. My question is How good are my chances of turning her into a hog dog? Would she turn out to be as good as a dog that was trained as a pup? Ive never tried to hunt a untrained older dog so Im asking for opinions from some of you that have. Is it worth a try?

most deffently worth the try one of my better catch dogs was a female pit about two years old was a spoiled house dog her whole life raised by some college girls then they rented a bigger house that didnt allow pets and I accuired her she took to it like she knew exactly what to do I would just watch for dog aggression

x2.. The biggest problem I have seen from older ones that have mostly been house pets is that most didnt lead/handle worth a crap.. Some adjust and some seemed to never figure it out... Always worth a try though...

I would say yes hands down. She will either have it or not. I started my APBT at 5 yrs old... but he also had a really good handle before I showed him a pig and had I've had him since he was tiny. So give it a shot!

Most pits usually have the desire to catch, it's just finding the switch that turns em on.
I enjoy getting older pits that were housedogs mostly because o didn't have to raise em and they seem eager to please and easier to deal with when trying to train em to lead. Alot of em are lazy from being in the house constantly which makes them extremely calm. I'd rather deal with that then a crazy hyper dog jumping off the end of a lead.

The one I got a couple weeks ago is 3 or 4 and absolute hates a hog and is working out great. Never seen a dog that hates a hog as much as he does

I hate raising bull bull dog pups because my wife and kids get attached to them and don't want me to hunt them. I usually get my catch dogs at 2 to 3 yrs. old from vet clinics and they are usually spayed or neutered and I have had good luck. The prey drive is usually there no matter how old you start them.

Almost exact same way i got mine. Chick found her and raised her in an apartment and landlord said she had to go. I have no idea on her breeding or age but she is stupid fast and hits like a train. "the sun is shining somewhere in texas" -Jason Boland

Do you love her as in the way she's built or you have created a bond with her kinda love? Not every dog has to hunt, some can just be good companions, you could be saving her life if you love her that much. I know I know, spoken like a true tree hugger.
