If you are sure that he hasnt done it before and you want to try to stop it now, you could use a shock collar, or my favorite method...a nice switch!  I dont mind tearing a finished dog's but up for trash...they get the message.  But you have catch him running the deer and punish right away.  If he hasnt ever done it before, I wouldnt invest in the shock collar just yet.  See what happens next time.

There's been a lot of good hogs at the end of deer races. Don't beat him too bad for it.

Agree 100% I have 1 that runs a deer almost every hunt.....it ticks me off but he find me his fair share of pork and if he can hear the bay he is there every time.

My best hog dog is also a pretty good deer dog lol.  Like the others said I've seen him trash on a deer which ran him right into a hog.  Just all depends on how bad it bothers you.

A good whipping works fine.

Be dang sure it's a deer he's running.  Just cause you see some deer, you better be watching for that hog that's behind them deer sometimes  Wink

Leave on a deer, stop on a hog ! How long has it been since he's been hunting. If he's been on a chain for a while then he may have just been fresh and there was'nt any hog sign to run.

Sometimes even good dogs when fresh or after being laid up will trash a little if there aren't any hog tracks to run, had two of mine screw up at least twice last night that aren't prone to that crap.....sometimes they want to just run something when they can't find a hog.

Yep...

If it starts to become habit though, a shock collar works good if you can see them actually do it.... I don't mind otherwise

This may sound funny to some people but its true it will work, i worked for a large field trial operation in highschool and the man i worked for would do this to discipline his, you could bet after he bit that the dogs would be all work.
