I owned about a dozen and a half and I culled everyone of em lost several thousand and have been catahoula free for 3 years

you have to be very very picky about the bloodline you get. IMO stay away from the baypen lines and take your time choosing

I have hunted with some good cats before but its been years ago. Me personally my dogs have lil bit of everything in them but mostly ybm and lil bit of hound. I would shy away from the cats these days bc people seem to breed for looks instead of performance IMO.

Alright I guess im gonna be the first person to post something good about catahoula's. My best two dogs are catahoulas and I absolutely love them but everyone is right you have to choose good bloodlines. My male catahoula hunts out between 600-800 yards, and makes loops to check back in occasionally, He is very gritty and catches with my catchdog. He is out of the Abney Bloodlines

I had several in the past. First one was my favorite as far as personality, and was a naturally talented dog but I didn't have the ability to utilize his full potential.
Got two of them right now from a real close friend. They are both very talented dogs.
The female is a winding machine and is the most smart-rough dog ive personally hunted with.
The male takes a track and works it well. I like him a lot as well.
The only thing I've honestly seen in catahoulas that I don't like is their home front behavior. All of them I've ever had possessed decent handle in the woods but needed constant reminding to shut up at home. I also don't like dogs who just go nuts on the chain and jump all over me at feed time and that's what ive seen of the ones I've had.
All that being said, the weatherford Ben bred yellows I've had were far worse, I can positivly say that at least the catahoulas went crazy becuase they like interaction.
All in all, I like the current cats I've got

I hunted with a fine line of working Catahoulas this weekend. Seen a dog that just turned two and a 7 month old puppy trail up, bay and keep bayed a 290 lb Barr hog for close to an hour almost a mile from where we turned em loose. There's some good ones out there, be particular though  |

He's 4 months old and he seen his first hog today and went crazy the pig was in a pen we took the pig in the woods for a mock hunt and he hunted right behind my lead dog and had his nose to the ground hauling a$$ he stayed with the track step for step with me lead dog and bayed for 45 min with my lead dog but when we moved locations for a new mock hunt set up he got the scent and trailed it by himself and only bayed 30 minutes

They are just like any other breed. There are good ones and bad ones. I have hunted behind some sure enough cat dogs that get the job done, and behind some cats i wouldn't feed my table scraps to. Looks wise, I really like catahoulas, but it all comes down to performance. There is good and bad, regardless of the breed.

Mine don't hunt real far out but , I can tell you when they on a hog , when they through there head in the air an make a few circles an take off you better get your catch dog ready , if my main dog breaks about 400 yards out he gonna be on a hog an is pretty rough will catch most hogs under 125 or so by himself an when another dog gets there they prolly gonna catch , on a small hog he will bark once or twice then catch it

I am sure Mike will roll his eyes  but I am gonna toot my catahoulas horn a little... I have seen him run a track that other dogs pass up and he will find a hog. he doesnt hunt real deep but when he leaves out rest assured he is on one (I kind of like this). Boo so far doesnt have tons of bottom but seems to get them bayed by himself pretty good. For a Find dog I like him allot and he will road further than u want to drive. I guess what I am saying is he his a hot nosed no bottom piece of crap but can road for ever.. but to date has found and bayed more hogs than any of my other dogs. until my other dogs step up to the plate Boo still is the best I have (if you count found hogs) I dont have the honey hole spots to hunt like allot of guys but he can get the hog found if it is close, Now getting them shut down is another story, I typically have a couple black blooded dogs to cast in to the race that will stick with one. My catahoula is by no means a super star or even a hog dog (by some peoples standards) but he can and will find a hog and until I can get a yard full of better dogs he will eat here!! So i feel the RIGHT catahoula can be a good dog in the right situation. I would venture to say if you are in a hog infested place a catahoula will do u good and if the hogs are scares maybe look for something that gets out and hunts deep?? I have heard about deep hunting cats but to date I havent seen them, I have heard they are out there. I am by no means a pro hog hunter but I do like my cats.. I know what my cats are going to do every time i let them out of the box and if a hog has crossed recently I will get a bark. All in all I like like my cats....
