I've had one time where I thought one was about to get up from under me. It was the 9th hog and final hog of the night last summer and I was beat, dogg tired. I crawled off into the thicket and grabbed leg didn't have room to get it flipped so I just layed my chest on his butt while I got some ties on his front legs. He couldn't do nothing as I am a heavy load to walk off with. Or so I thought.
Turned out ok, just jerked the ropes on his front legs and they flipped him so I could get to sittin right on him.
I usually take the front bottom leg and hold it up past their pecker, they ain't usually goin nowhere.
Thats exactly what i do and place 1 knee behind the ear and 1 right before the hind leg and rarely have a problem. "the sun is shining somewhere in texas" -Jason Boland |

I always straddle em after i get em flipped. Grab a front leg and sit on top of em. Lot times i dont leg em either i will jump on ther back and grab em by hair on ther backs when they are caught. Especially in water is that works good for me

When it is just Allen and myself we leave the CD on until we have him hobbledif it is a stout hog....and I have never seen a hog get up on him and his buddy until the other weekend.
The dogs bated one about 150 and after they got him flipped they started dragging him out (my husband's friend and his brother). I was walking in front of them to put the CD up when I heard someone say oh ****! And my husband say 'watch out Gary', some how the hog stood up on the brothers and he was doing his best to give the one a good rooting. As I started to let the CD go to give Gary some help his brother football tackled the hog and mugged him down....it was a relief the hog didn't have teeth and that I didn't let the CD go cause it could have been bad.
I guess because as a kid it was drilled in my head about how bad a hog can be that I am leery as all get out about them and I have watched my husband and these other two catch some big hogs when it was only two of them....and then they let a 150 pounder work them over....I will stick to the CD helping out lol

Ha Noah I know what you mean, but I've never had trouble with them standing back up after I have the front leg and it flipped. The hard part for me is sometimes throwing a big hog and having him get his feet back under him before I can get the front leg pulled back.
In the bumpers hunt w/ Chance we caught all those hogs and only used the bulldog 4 times all weekend. It was something to catch alot of those hogs when they were still being bayed by the cur dogs. It was so hectic, dogs baying hogs everywhere. Guys (chance, his kids, JJ and nick) would come flying in off their horses and we'd get right in there and catch the hog with no dogs caught. Dogs Pulling tail and nuts but no ear. That hog would be flipped and tied so fast. We caught 11 hogs in 45 minutes. Not once did we use the cd and they were all 150-200 hogs. It was some of the most fun and work I've ever had hunting. I wish we has video of it because it was something else

Part of the equation may have to do with how long the hog is bayed before you get there. With several dogs working a hog, it will wear down quickly. The hog that gave us heck the other night was only bayed a couple of minutes before we got to him. We just happened to be close when he was struck and he only had one loose baying dog on him until we got next to the field he was in and turned another on loose. Then all we had to do was drive down to a crossing and back up the field... and we werent driving slow  . With a little luck and four wheelers you can be at a bay real quick every now and then. |

The hog ran at jj trying to cut him and caught him by his ears I ran up and leged the hog. Jj had no choice but to catch him.lol it was a great hunt with some top notch hands. |

Excellent point miss Dinah, the style of dogs we hunt/the way we hunt often stop a hog so fast the hog can still be real "green"(fishing term for a big fish that's not worn down enough to bring in the boat)... a green hog can be a handful compared to one that's been worn down by the dogs for a while. I'd still love for any of yall to show me some videos of JUST YOU catchin'/rollin'/tyin' good hogs by yourself.... |

Gotten to old for tying one any more, but yesteryear , the first order of things was to tie one hind leg to something solid. If something goes wrong you don’t have to run so far . If you hunt long enough you will find out that hogs will do anything to escape and are capable of things yet to be seen!!!! Hun’t Um Up!!!

As you said Purebreed, it's that back/bottom leg that spooks me... I'm hoping somebody can prove to me that just pullin' on that top/front leg can eliminate this issue honestly... but I have my doubts. ... had a bo-hog stand up on me a year or two ago, told my buds to pull the bulldogs off... "I got this"... lol... ... sumbitch got that bottom/rear under him and up he went... I sprawled out and leaned back on that "top"/front leg as hard as I could... so hard, the "pop" I heard was not his leg breaking, it was my rib lol... I got his ass rolled back over, but I had a hard time coughing for the next month hahaha... if he'd been another 10% stronger, he would have had me. Until I get that rear/bottom, I just don't feel safe... What about Just 9% stronger? ... having said THAT.... I've had all the above and had a good one "buck" and it don't matter WHAT legs you "had" aholt of lol |
