I was just wandering why none of the boars i catch have big cutters the biggest ive caught are maybe an inch...is it cuz there not mature?
or do they just have to much domestic in them?

Do the hogs have large diameter cutters that are broke or are the short and pencil like.  I could be wrong but I have always used the diameter of the cutters and the wear on the molars to determine age.  Domestic boars get big teeth just like feral hogs.  Some areas with large populations of hogs and dense boar hog populations produce smaller (broken) teeth because they break them fighting.

are you hunting in woods or open land? swamps or thickets? im from beaumont tx and we have a little bit of everything, i can go to my deer lease and get o a 250-300lb hog that will only have 1 1/2 teeth at best due to the fact that pigs in the woods break their tusks on trees, roots etc etc..........if you took the same 300lb hog and put him in the rice fields in labelle he will grow 3 inch plus teeth........he has nothing to break them on. I dont think that it has anything to do with the maturity level of the hogs in your case. just my 2 cents.

yea i hunt in really think stuff but the cutters dont look like they have been broken but they might have and no there not pencil like most of the have thick teeth..

thats probly ur answer, if its thick cover and the hogs have thick teeth, odds are the inch teeth that u are seeing at one time were probably bigger but just broke off.  just my 2 cents, thats how it is around here

That is interesting, I have never thhought about hogs breaking teeth on trees, roots etc.  Seen plenty of toothy hogs in some really really thick woods but I guess it could it happen.

I know there are alot of hogs and i mean 250 to 400 lb hogs that caught in farm land areas that had any where from 3/4 to 1 1/2 tusks and always wondering the same thing but this year has been a different story we have caught and killed several that have had some good cutters so Im not sure what the change is.

Thats on thing that has always puzzled me too. Ive caught big boars with small teeth and 150 pounders with 3" worth out of the same areas! I know they break them fighting and what  'matt_aggie04" and "justincorbell" say sure makes a lot of since to me. I will say one thing. Ive been hunting SE Texas for 20 plus years and rare are the boars with over 4 inch cutters for me. 2.5 - 3 inchers are usually the length on the big hogs I catch. I have only ran down 2 hogs in 22 years of hunting with better than 4" in cutters.

Thats why the monsters that get posted on ETHD just blow me away! Rare trophies in my book.
Seems like the Florida boys are blessed with more than their fare share of big tusked boars to me! Or is that a curse? lol.

I would say the boars with the biggest teeth in florida are near saltwater.  I always thought they got it from eating shellfish.  they are also a little meaner on the water.  You guys have bigger boars with bigger teeth in louisiana and texas.  I killed one at larry parkers house that weighed 325 on the scales.  We had to winch it onto the 4 wheeler. We rarely get hogs that big and I know you guys probably catch bigger than that with all the feed and open land you've got.  If a hog in florida lives to be 300 lbs he's usually a straight up dog killer.  pic of parker boar, now mounted on my wall

I've always caught hogs with big cutters in areas they have good food, what nutrients and minerals in the ground and blood line.  Just like getting a deer to grow antlers.  I have two places I hunt 5 miles from eachother one wide open pasture land with a couple orange groves and some oaks and most hogs have small teeth.  Now the other place is a mining area(lots of minerals in the ground) I have caught 80 lbs. boars with 21/2" cutters those with tear a dog up quick.  Just my 2 cents.http://i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv52/JSEAY82/l_65af835057e5689d6bca52d6c527946e.jpg[/img]]

 i know what you are saying.
i have seen the same thing in our hogs, it is really rare to catch a boar in ok. with bigger than 2" teeth.
i dont know if its the line of hogs we have or the minerals in the ground ?

last summer i caught a boar went 405# on the scales he had 2" teeth and they had not been broke off, and they were small diam. also.

then i have caught the rare 200# with 2 3/4" and 3"

about 5 yrs ago i caught a hog you could just tell he was an old fighter with just some big ole broke off stumps.

in 12 years hunting hogs in oklahoma i have only caught a couple of hogs over 3" and that was just 3 1/8 or so

i just havent seen alot of the big diam. teeth in our hogs.

seems like most of the realy big boars in oklahoma will run your dogs thru a set of sows and shake them off on a different hog, ive seen my dogs leave out with a big boar and when i get caught up to them they have a totally different hog

I don't know if any of you guys ever hunted a WMA here in Fla called Green swamp West. Its around Dade City, FL and has more toothy boars, on an average, than anywhere else I have ever hunted. We caught a 140 lb yellow boar one year that had 3 1/4" teeth. A lot of guys catch big teeth in there on the hog hunt and lots of guys get dogs wrecked too!!
But that place has always had hogs with teeth and has really good bucks in it too. May be the minerals in the soil, feed, or??
We normally catch several good boars in there every year.
Other places we hunt the boars just seem to get as much teeth.
The heaviest hog I ever caught and actually weighed was 315 lbs and that was a boar hog. Most of our hogs will get in the 250-280 lb range tops, and thats a big hog here in Fla.
We don't get the 400-600 lb hogs like you see from other states. At least nowhere I have ever hunted.

Both of these hogs were caught on the same small property. One has small thin teeth, the other had long thick teeth.  I can't explain it, just happy I was there with the dogs the same time the hogs were there.

most the places i have to hunt they don't get super sized cutters but just up the road i've got to hunt some wheat and rice fields a couple times and some of those hogs have monster teeth.  i don't know if this is just coincidence or if anyone else has had the same findings or results but it seems the hogs we caught off the rice were far bigger bodied and fat than that off the wheat.  probably just coincidental but it just seemed to be the same results the times we hunted em and the fields where only a quarter mile apart at the most.

well ive only been hunting now for 3 years but i ran into a hog last week with the biggest cutters ive seen around here they were atleast 2 or 3 inches.... i just sit there and watched him tear up my dogs... there was nothing i could do..and i didnt get the hog...

I've hunted it the last 3 years.  You are correct, I've seen 100# boars with 3" teeth.  It is the dangest thing I have ever seen.  Two years ago in there, some guys hunting in the same block as us, killed 2 barrs and a boar.  Both barrs were over 225#.  Neither had more than 3/4" of teeth.  The little boar that they killed, wrecked their whole pack.  He had 2 1/2" teeth.  I gave them some blood clot powder to buy them some time with their pack.  Their boar would have been lucky to go 125#.  We hunted the Hampton tract this year, and saw some decent teeth, but nothing phenominal.  I've got the hunt in the panhandle this week.  We'll see what they got to offer.  We will be bringing my blueticks, and my buddies blackmouths.  It is a night time hunt only, so we'll see how it goes.

Driving down the road in there after the first couple days you will see more dead dogs and more dogs layed out on tail gates than you ever will at one time !! Fun hunt though and you get to catch a lot of good hogs !!!!!!!

No one likes getting there dogs cut down.  However, if you are hunting for sows or boars with no teeth, coon hunting may be more fun for you.  I would rather catch a 225# boar with 3 1/2" machetes, than 30 sows.  JMO!!!!!!  I'm in it to see good dog work, but eventually they have to be tested.  I strive to produce blueticks with great tracking ability, cold nose,  a stong prey drive, great confirmation, looks to kill, and grit like no other.  So far, I'm acomplishing this through basing my kennel off of great foundation bloodlines.  I have had no complaints to this point, and am extremely happy thus far.  Hopefully, this week produces plenty of photo-ops.
