my question is ..... can you expect to find some good hog hunting dogs out of cattle working dogs or is this two diff traits ?   iv'e been looking at some reg. bmc pups that down the line the grandparents and so on  were hunted on hogs but the parents are strickly stock dogs .  can the hunting part be bred out of them or do you think they can be a double edged sword ?  all input welcome  thanks

yeah i hear ya ....... i always believed in getting pups from proven hunting parents , dogs that range out , gritty , and just flat out hit the ground looking for pigs .  im just wondering if the cow stock dogs are born with a diff goal in mind or do they also have the hunt drive in them ?  does anybody use their stock dogs for hog hunting also ?

Chances are you will be glad you got those pups if you do

With the days of small, open pastures some cowdog lines have lost the hunt.  So the hunt could be lacking but you said previous generations were used for hog hunting, so I would not think the hunt was bred out of them in one or two generations.  If it was there in the first place.  AND in my opinion, to be considered a good cowdog it needs to have some hunt in them.  Also, depending on how and where they get used.....alot of cowdogs are bred to have alot of hunt in them.  Cows hide in the brush just like hogs do.  The fact that the parent's are working cow dogs means that most likely, a strong livestock working instinct is still there and thats a +++ in my opinion.

Ask about the cow dogs and see if they will range out and locate cows when need be.  Where they made cowdogs becuase they lacked the hunt to make a hog dog?  If thats the case then you may not want to go that route.  Or does this line of dogs have a history of being used both ways?    Also, see if you can find out about the previous generations that were hog dogs.  If they had a strong hunting instinct to start with, its not likely to be lost in a few generations of cow dogs.

The man i got my dogs from (Mr. Witherspoon) uses most of his for both, if they wont excel at both he will usually cull or sell em, the dogs i received from him weren't great on cattle from my understanding but they will hammer on hogs.

If a dogs parents are good cow dogs more then likely the pups would make good cow dogs or hog dogs what ever you put then on. bmc were originally bred for herding cattle and hunting wild hogs. So it's just there instinct to bark at cows or hogs cause it's bred into them. The bmc pups I have raised were not hard to break off cows at all. I just had to holler at them get there attention.

4 out of 5 of my dogs will rollout both ways. They will find and bay a cow when the horses are out and theres no collar on emm and when the garmins are strapped on its like a light switch they are ready to find and bay a hog. They started out as cowdogs and when I put the hogs to emm they caught on pretty quickly. But by no means are they jam up cow dogs by day and jam up hog dogs by night. They are what I consider WORKING dogs.

Cowdog stock will work fine for hogs, it just depends on who you get them from and how the line is worked. The invention of barbed wire has change the cur dogs tremendously. Yes the cur was used to drive cattle and hogs to market but that was not their intended purpose, they were bred back in the day to be a "Meat dogs" they had to put meat on their owners table in order to live, ammo was expensive then so they needed a dog that could get it done by themselves. They had to feed their owners before they were fed, anything on the thicket floor was fair game back then.

My two best dogs are out of a long line of cow dogs and I am very happy with both of them. They are young but they have been getting the job done and only getting better.
