http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/07/29/scalia-opens-door-for-gun-control-legislation/

For some reason, I'm surprised by Scalia stating that there are limits to a person's 2nd amendment rights to carry weapons.  Not sure why, just surprised.

I found it interesting that he seems to delineate based on whether you can actually "hand carry" the weapon.  He stated that even those can be limited because rocket launchers that can bring down planes aren't protected by the 2nd amendment.  He is interesting.  I think his line is rather reasonable.

I was also fascinated by the way justices look at constitutional issues.  His start and finish line are what was the limitations of society at that time.  That makes sense, but to some degree it seems to limit us to 18th century thinking, technology and knowledge.  I don't find it right or wrong  ...  simply fascinating.

I see the point of more strict gun laws because of the shooting, but I also look at those gun laws as making it where the average law abiding citizen can NOT carry a weapon to protect theirselves from that kind of thing. If they allowed open carry in every state, it would be a balancing act on the laws, but it would hopefully make a criminal think twice before doing anything stupid, knowing that people are fully armed and ready. if the weapon can be seen especialy with multiple people around that are carrying, it would have to be a real stupid person to do some kind of act of violence. it is a doubke edge sword no matter how you slice it. it will piss the anti-guns off by making it open carry, but yet piss the pro-guns off by restricting weapons even more. it is human greed on every corner and nobody can be pleased without pissing the opposite off and vise-versa.

Why should I trade one tyrant three thousand miles away for three thousand tyrants one mile away? An elected legislature can trample a man's rights as easily as a king can!

Charles.  I think making important decisions when things are emotional almost always leads to bad results  ...  including making laws.  Any law made as a response to a crazy person doing something crazy will be a bad law.  They need to not do anything  ...  now.

When criminals start obeying gun control laws then those laws will work to make us safer.  Hmmmm.  Yeah, that's a fairy tale that is never going to happen.

I like being armed.  I keep a weapon in my car, in my office, by my bed.  I'm not paranoid.  I just know there are both crazy and evil people in this world  ...  and I want to be able to defend myself and my family.

I think over time, the SC will draw lines of what is protected by the 2nd amendment and what is over the line.  I also think they will make a reasoned judgment.  I just loved the glimpse into Scalia's thinking.  He is interesting.  I do think he is the right kind of person to be a SC justice.  He thinks deeply but refuses to follow group thinking.

As to open carry.  I do not know why, but I am not comfortable with that.  I don't want to be in the grocery store or restaurant and have someone with a weapon strapped across their back or tied to their leg.

Everytime something bad happens because of a idiot with a gun the law makers need to remember the 65 million responcible gun owners that don't do anything wrong.

Cops do it all the time. Wink .... and our local cops are a joke. I wouldn't trust them to shoot around my dogs much less try to protect me.
