Hey guys,
I was wondering what the best snake boot and chaps are? I have never had to wear them before since I am from Indiana and we don't have to worry about snakes. Also, what and where do you want to be protected from a snake bite? How high can they strike up? I am very new to this aspect so if anyone can give me some details on snakes and what I need to do or look out for, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

i wear a pair of chap from tejas hunting supplies in alto tx and they come all the way up and attach to your belt. They are easy to walk in, they can be a little warm in the summer but not to bad, they also help in thickets. I have had one snake to hit them and it didn't go threw so I guess they work pretty good.

How high do you have to worry about protecting? Are the chaps actually snake proof all the way up to your hip or just below the knee? Thanks for the replies.

Most chaps are going to just have snakeproofing to just below the knee but should protect a little past that. I wear Danner sharptail Coveys (They quit making them but are bringing back this summer). SUPER comfortable and outlast any other snake boot I've owned and I tried them all. Another idea is the gaiters like the guy in the pic below with me has on the right, they're cheap and pretty good deal for snake proofing Only chaps I know personally that turned a snake bite above the knee is a brand called turtleskin but they're pricey and the quail guide wearing them when it happpened thinks it was more luck then snake proofing, but said below the knee they are definatly snake proof.

I've been wearing the Danner sharptail covey boots and love them. They are comfortable and 100% waterproof after a year of abuse. They had discontinued the line and I've thought about trying to track down a couple more pair just to have for when the current pair wears out....that's how much I like them. Russ, I'm glad to hear they are bringing them back. I guess my multiple emails payed off.

I also vouch for the Danners. News to me, but glad to hear they are bringing them back. I bought an extra pair last year when Sportsmans Warehouse had them on clearance, but so far my originals are in good shape. Another thing I like about the Danners is that they have more of a rubber (almost like small cleats) sole which gets a lot better traction than the typical slick boot sole. When it comes to creek banks and the such, I need all the traction I can get to keep me from stalling out!

I guess my question would be, do you have to worry about a snake striking you above the knee line where it seems both boots and chaps stop for protection? So would you say that chaps and boots are not necessary or would you go with both?

I have been struck a hand full of times and they hit around calf and ankle, but it is possible that they could hit above the knee. I would go with the boots one they protect from snakes, water proof, and keep thorns out of legs. I would never leave into the brush with out mine on.

Did you have any idea they were there when you were struck?

I'll be real honest been hunting hogs, coons and cats for almost 25 yrs run into a handfull of snakes and never been hit. Although I do wear chaps or boots for the most part guess its a security thing. I run across them to fast or hear them after I have passed them. Hunt mostly at night only time there was a close call we were snake hunting in Big Lake gassing dens, and I didn't see the big boy sunning.

The ones that struck me I never knew they were there and sometimes you can hear them when the dogs have ran through there, but wouldn't guarantee they will warn you every time.

Like I said I heard from a reliable source they're coming back with a different instep (I think) and darker leather but still as a Pull on. The lady that told me this said she been hounding them to after she got all the calls from guides down here that like them.
