Release YOUR catch dog from??

Thus has been discussed to death in other threads, but it's one of the first questions I like to ask anyone I meet at a gas station or public place when they approach and start telling me all about their dogs and 500 pound hogs they've cuaght. It's one of those questions I use to help determine the attitude, ballsyness and character of a fella


Whether you wanna answer or not, whether you think I'm a douche or not, what are some dog handle related questions you use to figure a fella out?

good question.

my answer isnt gonna be "at 50 yards" type of answer but when i can see the bay then ill release. many factors also. and another would be if a RCD would be in the mix etc etc.

I ask em how many dogs and what breed they hunt first while scrollin thru my phone to pull up pictures, ill show em 1 or 2 of the bigger hogs ive caught in the past and let them guess the weight.......99% of the time the first thing a hog hunter says is something regarding weight, i always try to get em to guess......that usually helps me feel em out a bit

O and i try to release my cd as close as possible, i used to own a cd that i was comfortable at releasing at 100+ yards but my new one i prefer to release at 10-15yds if at all possible. I like gettin their as quick as i can to prevent her gettin wrecked.

well...we have hog hunters and we have dog men who hunt hogs...I don't worry about what a hog hunter says...but I like to see what dogs they call good dogs...and I quietly analyze the dogs and I decide which one is truly a dog worthy of keeping and which ones I would cull...some of these folks will tell you why this dog should be bred and I can only see a me too dog...me too dogs should not be bred in my opinion...so this is what I look at to decide just what a hog hunter/dog man knows...

but like any other sport...you can be a rookie and be awesome at the game...

Diff but kinda the same thing you are talking bout. Every time some one post pics of a good hog, there's always people that ask how many dogs he wrecked or something along those lines. Do yalls dogs really get tore all to chit on every good hog y'all catch? Every time I see these comments I think it's either one of 2 thing.  Either there dogs are just bad rough and catching before they get there or they're turning a catch dog loose and they're to big of panzys to help their dogs out when they are in a bind. Don't get me wrong, bad things happen to good dogs but not on every decent hog they get on. I'm not referring to any one when I say "y'all" Just some people in general...

Any catch dog that has been sent to several bays should go from how ever far it can hear it but I choose to send mine with in eye sight of the bay or some where around 30 to 50 yards at night.

I Was taught to cut em loose no farther away than you could be right behind them, sometimes that was at the hog sometimes that was maybe 30-50 yards off. I have also cut a catch dog loose to a hog around 100 yards out for the sake of slowing down a walking bay. But the older I get and the more I'm tuaght by fellas I respect, the more I believe it's just as much my duty as the pits to get that hog.

The more I hunt the more I see that a catchdog should be treated like a gun, BE SURE of your target and what's beyond it, meaning calm down take a breath, analyze the situation ad then cut em loose when your ready.

I don't believe their to be a right or wrong way I guess, I just know that I don't want my dogs hung out to dry thinking I'm coming only to find out that I'm ten minutes away.

 usually when the subject of hog huntin comes up it's the quiet ones that usually have some pretty good dogs . the ones that are the first to start bringing out the pictures and the stories of all the big hogs blah blah blah my dogs do this an my dogs can do that are for the most part trying to make [ themselves]  feel good . and it's those quiet ones i will allways single out to have a conversation with . the man that don't have nothin to proove to nobody is most than likely the best of the bunch .

60 or less. If I hear my curs catch, I cut a bulldog loose aslong I am 100 yards or less. Some places I can get in close but other places I will bust up the bay if I get too close. It isnt a matter of my dogs holding the hog if he goes to break it is a matter of the hog hitting a dog to get away.

I use to send the catch dog from about 100 yards or a little farther but one night I came to the bay and they had a bear treed now I wait till I see what it is
