Wondering what was the earliest and the longest it took for some yals pups-dogs to turn on, that ended up making sure nuff good dogs in the end. Just random thought, seeing what kinds storys yal have. Thanks

Let me answer your question with some questions.
It's obvious your asking for some reason, probably have a pup your worried about right now so answer me this,
what were the parents and the grandparents like?
Did the pup come from someone who when you see their dogs hunt you think, " man I wish mine were as good as them"
When did the parents of said pup "turn on"

I have a couple now that started bayin at 4 1/2 months that i plan on puttin in the woods at 8mths on (this nov) and ive had some that didnt even start baying til they were 11 months.....parents have alot to do with it. Some lines historically start early 4-5 months and others start late, ive heard of dogs that dont start until well after a year of age.

Both there parents were good, mom hogs and daddy was cows. But they will go both ways and i have seen in it action.
The two i have now are 5 months, i have put the on the out side of bay pen and the bay nice for 4 time on out side. I put them in the pen with small hog twice since then. They are looser than some my buddys pups but stay hooked bayin there butts off so long as the hog moves-keeps there attention every few mins. They do act like pups looking over there shoulder ever so often. But when they hear a squeal they automativally try to catch a ear.

We reached a gentlemanly consensus as it pertains to baypens, and I decided to turn over a newest and leave well enough alone, but, I gotta pick this scab.  What do you mean you've had them "start" at 12 weeks? Did they start barking at a hog? Or is it that they started striking hogs? Or could settle a bay? Or could drive a sounder? Or could drive even one hog? Or did they start bunching every cow in the pasture? What is it that they were started doing well enough at 12 weeks that they could be called started? |
