We have so many runners on my place and I was wondering what would be the best to stop a runner? Would it be a good catahoula or a good cur dog? I have heard both but which one would be better?

A good bullet in the ear would do the trick.  Lol sorry but any dog breed might be able to do it just got to find that dog.

We have a few alright dogs but we have a bunch of 400lb runners so it takes a couple good dogs to do it and by the time all the dogs get to the bay then the hog is gone

It dont matter what breed he is just as long as he can do the job. Bmc would be my choice but im a bmc guy. You need a dog to set one on his ass instead of chase him.

A lot of 400 hundred pounders wish I could be lucky enough to get one 400 pounder to run across any of my places

Oh yea as said above any breed could do it just need to get the right dog or keep a couple fresh dogs in the box catch the hog running across a road and turn some fresh dogs to him and pick up the others. That fall out of the race

Every time it happens like this : one of the dogs will find a pig  and try to bay it and by time any other dogs get there the hog is gone because that one dog couldn't hold a bay on a big pig like that by itself

That's a good thing that you have identified a possible problem. Heres my advice when it comes to a routine habit of "runnin hogs"

Take whichever dog is doing the main striking and leave all your other dogs at home. Let that dog strike the hog and see if one single dog can bring it to bay. If he does, sneak in their quietly as a churchmouse and send the catchdog or shoot that hog or whatever you do.

If he cant handle it, try  the same thing with the rest of your dogs individually and this should help to figure out if you've got running hogs or a sorry baybuster.

Good luck, I'm busy now but let the debate begin and I'll check back in later.

Why I said what I said above.

There are some hogs that are just gonna run, BUT if you are routinely Having hogs simply bolt when a second or third or fourth dog shows up, its time to ask 2 key questions, do I have a baybuster (or pack baybusters) OR would this hog get comfortable with a single dog.

It's easier said than done though because no one wants to think their dogs a baybuster. So you need to be sensitive about the approach.
If your striking them everytime then it shouldn't be real hard to figure out which dogs ain't cutting the mustard and get your affairs in order accordingly.

As far as why I chose to give an answer instead of picking on him, I don't know really other than to say I feel for folks who are having the "runnin hog" thing spoil their fun. I've had running hogs hurt my pride plenty and instead of letting them beat me, I have tried (whenever it's respectful to do so) to suggest leaving my dogs out, leaving this dog or that dog out or only running one now or fresh packing or whatever I could think of to beat that hog.

Two good plotts (I dont mean the average plott) that can stay with a runner until he stops.  Once he stops he is caught!  If you ever hunt behind a real good one, you will know what I mean.  Let his butt run for a while and them turn out plott number two...he cant run forever.

I am with Wilson, Id like to see one 400 lb.

When I killed him I didn't realize that a pig like that was so rare so I was stupid and didn't get a picture of him
