How many of you guys use your hog dogs for some other type of work, such as cat hunting, bear hunting, cattle work or even bird dogging? Do you notice they run differently when they are on another species?

Our main strike dog is a cow dog and a hog dog when we put a cut collar on him he won't mess with a cow but with a regular collar and with us on horses hell find cows and hell bay and catch when another dog gets there on cows and hogs

i used my ol catahoula  and several of his pups on hogs and cows . they were straight up try and catch a hog but knew to bay even the youngest of cattle . and this was for the most part an inherited trait . by that i meen i didn't have to teach them not to put teeth to a young calf . and ol jack , a cross dog  cat/walker would blow the woods down opening on a cow trail but was tight mouthed when hog hunting .

My friend has a half hangin tree half cat that he uses on hogs and cattle. But he hunts horseback and the dog fallows us til he hears a bay then goes and helps. Wen we get there hes our catch dog. And he can be called off and backed up off a hog but catches wen he hears us or sees us. And when hes told to get ahead and hunt then he finds and bays cattle.

We use our Bull Terriers and Patterdales on nutria, foxes and coons aside from hogs. Any of our curs are only used on hogs though.

I got bulldog I use for hogs and armadillo hunting lol. But you can probably find some multi game dogs on the dog trade listed under hog dogs that will run deer armadillos hogs possums and cows.....All jokes aside the only ones I have had would blood trail deer and retrieve. But do use a bulldog to track wounded deer and also as a catch dog

The line i am lucky enough to own comes from a man who will cull em in a heartbeat if they wont bay and find both cattle and hogs at under a year. Hell, the dogs ive got from him are nowhere near his best and I love everyone of em!

Looking to get a Blue Tick pup . His primary job will be to hunt coon at night. It would be great if he could be used on hogs too.
Would it be rare or uncommon for him to do both or do you just have to work him on both to get him started? I would like to use him on
coons by himself and bring him with the other dogs for hunting hogs. What y'all think ?

My dogs run cats, hogs and bear for a few days a season. They are loose baying dogs and the bay, meaning they put enough teeth to stop but dont get to gritty with any of the species, they seem to know how to run a bobcat real well and bay for more distances of the tree to keep an eye on the cat, with bear and hog they bay tighter than lion.  I find it fascinating how these little diferences in thier working styles are prominent on the game they run, and they are so minor that unless you run these dogs a lot a lay man or woman may not notice.

my grandfather owns a von plott line gyp shes 14 and in her prime she would run coon, bear, and hogs. best thing to do is to work on coons and use him as a help dog when you have a solid bay. by solid i mean your 100% that hog wont run anymore.  Wink Grin

Thats a sure nuff sign of refined blooded cow dogs.  I imagine it comes from a long history of the old timers culling the ones that were calf catchers.
