Erik's best gyp,  Girlfriend, was put down this weekend. She ultimately lost the battle to multiple diseases. She had contracted Rocky mountain Spotted fever as well as another unknown disease that caused kidney failure. A full autopsy is being done and all organs sent to Texas A&M for further diagnosis.

This is a sad day! A few people from the website got to hunt with this gyp in her prime and she was something.  Even more than her hunting ability this gyp was a producer. Girlfriend was out of a black gyp and a male dog while hunting on the Woodruff's ranch. As of now there are 5 generations of hog dogs out of her (Boogie, Briar, Goose, Jet, Mikey, Ruby, Salt and Sarge) Some people can believe or not but this gyp never produced a cull, every dog out of her will find, bay and finish hogs all day long on their own. For the 7 dogs listed above out of Girlfriend there were easily that many that have died or been killed by hogs. And they were all hog dogs, some of them being Super!!

I was talking to Big E this morning over coffee. With her loss it's the ending of a whole generation of hog dogs. Blaster is still alive at 9, but is now shooting blanks so we essentially lose that generation of blood. There is still Ruby, aka Seabiscuit( quite possibly the fastest cut dog alive lol) she is out of Cwards Ike dog and GF. She is currently being bred to Boogie, her first cousin, hopefully tightening up the line and capturing as much of the old blood as possible. The other gyp out of her is Salt, also out of the same cross. Chance has her on loan out T-Bob hunting her tail off.

This generation of dogs that Erik owned is the best I have seen in the past 7 years. It was truly a pleasure hunting behind Girlfriend, her litter mate Parvo, and Uncles Blaster and Roscoe.  GF and Parvo were a year old when I got to start hunting with Big E. from the time those gyps were 2 years old to 5 years they put the end to easily over a 1000+ hogs. Those dogs would find hogs no matter what, even if they had to go 2 miles to do it. They would roll off and and roll off and roll off all day long if you let them. More than once I've heard hog hunters making a hunt with us speak in amazement, "what kind of dogs are these?"... Girlfriend was so smart that if there were a few dogs baying a hog, she would leave and go find and stop another one. You could guarantee she was gone everytime. It's hard to put into words some of the stuff I've seen her to do. It was an honor to be able to learn hunting behind this dog. Maybe Big E will get on here and talk about her some. I know she has long been considered is number 1 gyp ever. The hog dog world is certainly darker today. RIP Girlfriend!!

It's a sad day, I've heard some amazing stories behind that dog.

I imagine she was like one of the family, so it's a hard loss for everyone involved.

She certainly must have been something truly special, I am honored to get to hunt a daughter of hers who can frustrate the bejesus out of me one minute and then be hammered down on real good boar the next. I bet Girlfriend is one of those dogs who honestly makes a man think that if there's no dogs in heaven, then we wanna go where they went!

I send my deepest condolences y'alls way and each one of y'all know that whatever little bit of help I can be in the future I'm more than willing to put in the time and effort to be of assistance. I know that Ol Seabusquit gyp is a sight to behold as well and that Ol girl definitely has some Nitrous in her ticker.
I hope this whole younger generation will stand the test of time and continue to live out the lives of true hog dogs, getting the honor of hunting with even one of them feels like holding a piece of Texas history so I don't even want to imagine what losing one must feel like.

RIP Girlfriend

I sure hate to hear this sad news,....I'm sad for Erik, the loss of sure a dog cannot be measured by us. I'm also sad for me,......because I never got to hunt with Girlfriend. Dogs such as her only come along a few times in our lives and sometimes,.....sometimes we are lucky enough to get to hunt with such a dog, and fewer are the times that we're lucky enough to own one like her. I've hunted with some super dogs in my years,.....owned only 2 but I consider myself extremely lucky to have had even one. Erik I hope that you'll have success in your attempts to further this bloodline,....I wish I lived closer,....I would consider it an honor to just hunt with these dogs from GF. Good luck and as hard as it is,.....try not to dwell on the pain of losing a friend and hunting buddy, but concentrate on all the fun you and GF had over the time you had her. R.I.P Girlfriend.

Sounds like a very special dog. Those are memories ya'll will have forever. It is a thing of beauty watching a dog as you described her work in the woods. Sorry for the loss.

Hope these litters y'all have in the works turn out like their ancestors!!

Thats a tough deal.  RIP Girlfriend. But she lives on in her offspring.  You all are doing a heck of a job keeping that old line of dogs going and thats a very uncommon thing these days.
