Well, i just got a knock on the door(2am) , the cops and neighbor. I had just got back from a quick hunt. The dog did good but I was beat. I put him in box but forgot to lock it? he got out and killed the neighbors cat. I am now responsible for a 400$ cat? I didn't know they existed. Anyways I'll be looking far new cd and a kitten for the neighbor...what a night. Finally found a cd I liked and now I've got to get rid of him to keep my dogs from getting a bad rep. Just great.

I had a similar thing happen years ago when i had great danes. The neighbor had probably thirty wild cats she would feed. The cats would jump my fence and eat my dog food. My gyp would kill them. The neighbor had the cops out a couple times but it was ok because the killing happened in my yard. One night i get a knock on the door and my dane had jumped my fence and went to killing cats, she had killed 4 of her wild cats that night and had one treed. Anyhow they ticketed me and had animal control come and take my dog two days later. I had to put her down and pay the lady for the cats. When i started calling the cops on the lady for her cats pissing in my boat in the garage all the sudden they were wild cats and not hers. Soon after this all i moved to the sticks. Still chaps my a$$... Can u tell? Anyhow sorry about your CD

Don't get rid of him
, does your town have leash laws ? If they do if both dog an cat were loose it's both of yalls fault not just your dogs so he can't blame just you his animal was loose too ,

Man I hate that happened. I still don't think I'd get rid of the dog if you like him.  Its not the dogs fault. No dog I know of would have ignored a cat especially unattended.

X2. I'd be looking into the leash laws I..the area if the cat was unattended then its not just the dogs fault, I wouldn't get rid of a good cd over it killing a cat.

My pitbulls jumped my fence once and went to town on my neighbors wild cats, killed bout 4 cats. They took my dogs into quarantine and gave me a choice, put em down or have them marked as dangerous dogs. Long story short, my lawyer came into the meeting, asked if the cat owners had followed proper procedure for a feral colony in florida. You shoulda seen the face of the animal control people when they had no choice but to let the dogs go.

Dogs chase (and sometimes kill) cats, and cats chase and kill mice. It's been like that for eons. Why can't people get that? $400 cat? What was it a leopard?  Tongue

I wouldn't get rid of him either. He was behaving naturally after all. Check your local laws as someone else mentioned. Where I lived last, cats were not allowed to be free roaming either, and if that were the case where you are, you would not be fully at fault.
For it to have been a $400 cat, it had to be a 'purebred' like a persian or something like that. They better be producing receipts. Also, if they cared about their dang cat so much, why did they allow it to free roam, where it coulda been hit by a car, attacked my loose critters, etc.

Thanks for the advise, it was a long night. The cop said I will most likely not have to quarantine him because he attacked a cat and not a human or dog, there is a leash law so that probablly made a difference. Im just fired up on the price of a OUTDOOR CAT. Does this mean when one of her other valuable cats piss in my truck I can call the cops? I have been nice and just take Them for a little ride. Either way the guy I got him from came and got him today, so now it looks like the ol 1022 is my cd again. I wonder what happens when he gets out and kills her cat in my front yard?(:

I'm located just outside San Antonio city limits, the cat was a mayncoon* whatever that means.

If it was indeed a pure Maine Coon.....they are pricey....and the owners are that much more stupid for allowing him to roam free!

When my dogs get out I am more worried about my dogs. Mine got out but I noticed real fast. Down the road a guy has a couple Chihuahuas that just roam around getting into people's trash. I found my two dogs in his yard and no Chihuahuas.

The only other time my dogs got out I had animal control all over me and did not even get a kiss. While his dogs walked right by and they did not say a thing. On top of that I hate is dogs coming over and barking at me and getting my dogs upset.

Now nobody even saw my dogs and nobody knew anything. I never saw any hurt or dead yip yaps. But I could not just pretend nothing happened. So after a few days and his dogs were not around I walked down to find out if his dogs were hurt or missing. I just had to do the right thing. When I got down there the yip yaps came out barking at me. To be honest I was just glad my dogs had not hurt them because I can't hunt a dog that would do that.

The point is that you have to do what is right just like you are doing. A dog I would get rid of my dog but not over a cat. $400 cat I would give the $200 because they should not have an animal out like that. If they don't like it tell them to look at the leash law and don't give them anything. But to be honest it would come down to the neighbor for me. How good of a neighbor are they? If you have not had any problems before this I would trade the dog for another one so they think the dog is gone and give them $500. You might end up with a good neighbor.

I'm no attorney but I'd think your poor catch dog had to fight for his life against this rogue cat. Surely 400 dollar cats can fight like hell. So u should send her a bill for pain and suffering and all the psycho therapy the poor dog will have to endure since he had to use deadly force in defense of his life!! Poor guy. I remember the first cat I killed in self defense.........walking to school in the second grade and there he was in the shrubs...poised to strike, licking his uhhh chops......  Evil
