I have a young dog that I really like but the only thing I would change is for him to range out further. I keep him and my longer ranged dog together hoping he would start running with him and that hasn't worked are there any other things I could try?

Just keep hunting him. Ive learned that a dogs range sometimes comes with age and confidence. But im not the type to whoop my dogs to run miles away from me. A good shorter range dog will suprise you alot when your rangy speed demons miss a track.

I just finished reading a book about training search and rescue dogs and it said to get a dog to range out further to walk at an angle away from where the dog is going to get them more comfortable with ranging away from you.  Might be worth a try if you're hunting on foot.  Haven't tried this myself yet, but I thought it was an interesting concept.

Keep feeding him tracks. Range comes with age and confidence.

sounds like it will help...

Also, if you have the time take him to a good spot in the woods...straight from the chain or kennel to the dog box and then turn him out and ignore him for a good while...the pup might get tired of hanging around and it could possibly range out and explore...once it does this this then start moving and let the dog trail you up...do this a few times and it might help...you can't make a dog range out if it is not bred to do so...but you can encourage him to do what comes natural to him...

I believe range is a gene lol the ones with it usually start off that way but even pups that have good range usually go further and further say your pups short range now dont mean it wont end up med or long range. Most important is the dog stays working and not sitting by you or snoozing. If the pup is still short range after its 2 yr B-Day then I believe thats about as far out its gonna hunt. I run off and leave my dogs alot and they have figured out I always seem to find them thanks to Mr Garmin and I think that adds fonfidence we always come together and the know when they find a hog I am on my way. So in a nut shell your dog I believe will may never have alot of range but will probably have enough just keep it on hogs. Dont let the dog hang around pick you a limb and tear that azz up when it comes back make it get ahead or load it up but dont let it just hang out with you this is all my opinion.

wouldnt part of this be a contradiction. You said its a gene then you said whoop it to get away if it a gene and cant be taught then what good does it do to whoop it? Grin

Not really I guess what im trying to say is some dogs just dont have to be told get ahead and those that dont naturally leave out have to be made to and the dog thats made to get ahead never seem to get to far away from you in my experience I have had some that went out from day one and continued to get deeper . I had a dog that was a hog nut but he wanted the others to find it and him bay it and he would find a hog but I had to make him hunt and even then he was Med at best this has been my excperience dont mean to be confusing or discouraging if range is what you want. I believe some dogs are born with range but I think you can get a dog that hangs to hunt but they never seem to be good as the other. Wink

Ok i see  Grin  funny buddy has a yella dog that i say is the best help dog that exists. he wont go far hunting they bay he is there and will roll off on the next hog if in a group but no matter what he will not leave to hunt the first hog. I dont whoop them away because imo i have seen most dogs that get whooped to range away tend to run down the roads more than anything. I want a dog to beat the brush up when it ranges

Understood I have never thrashed a dog bad but if I got one hanging around I will pick a limb and scold it to get out of my site the dog I mentioned above though most of the time went out and just stood and listened for a bay lol the Garmin told on him I always thought he was hunting. But I did hunt with an old boy that had a Plott Mtn cur mix at first I didnt think much of the old dog but when he put her on a track she would line it out and go till she found a hog she just wouldnt range to find the track herself. I hunt where the hogs are few and finding good sign is tuff I been trying to get more and more range out of them and now I look for it first in a pup.

Someone told me to get range outta a male try throwing out a female in heat that will get out there, that he'd follow her all day long, lol.  I guess thatd work, as long as whoever had that gyp wouldnt mind pups from it.    Undecided   when mine were first starting theyd take off like banshees about 75 yards, sniff around like fools, then haul a$$ back, so when theyd disappear round a bend or in the woods, id turn around and haul my own a$$ back the other way so theyd kinda get used to runnin further to come back to me.  They go about 250-400, which i'm happy with.  Not that i was able to RUN THAT far from em  Grin
