i'm  hearing some difirrent defintions of "Rough"

Rough: to me would be a dog that wont step back and bay a hog that is standing or backed up in some brush, etc.
a rough dog to me is one that constantly wants to put there teeth in a hog.

Bay Dog: to me this is a dog that has enough gritt to snag a running hog on the a$$, but enough brains to back up and bay that hog is he stands or turns to face the dog

i have found that a rough dog pushes hogs, and so i have worked on having bay dogs.

id like to hear some different views on this

I feel the term "bay dog" is a fairly broad description, as is "rough".  It takes a mix of the two to accurately describe how a dog really works IMO.

Some examples...

1) Rough/loose baydog:  One that'll grab and then back off when the hog sits down.  Preferable to me.

2) Rough/tight baydog:  Same grab, but not any back off... "picking" at the hog, sometimes causing the hog to break.

3) Soft/loose baydog: Good for nothing but extra mouth, trailing, starting.

to me..
rough is a dog that'll put a tooth on a hog to stop it when needed but will back up and bay.

a catchy dog is one that's gonna put tooth on em and not back off and try to catch a hog by himself or with another catchy dog.
a regular ol bay dog to me is something that does just that, just sits back and bays.

these are just my definitions...but i haven't been doing this very long.  this is just how i explain something to someone that asks me.

i don't know... that's just me.

What I call "catchy" you call "rough".  It appears we desire the same qualities in our dog, our terminology is just different.

To me a rough bay dog will catch a small hog or sow but will only put teeth on a big hog until it stops to bay, then will back up and bay. If the hogs breaks, the rough bay dog will do what it takes to stop him. He may even take ahold but if he gets slung off will back up and bay.
If the dog catches any hog when he gets there, then to me thats a running catch dog, not a rough bay dog...
Then you have the "Sprint" bay dogs...the long distance bayers that won't get close to a hog or put teeth on one to stop it.
I have seen all types produce hogs in the woods, just depends on where and how you hunt.

For me though, if a dog won't put teeth on a hog to stop it, or catch a hog less than 100 lbs by itself, it won't stay here.....

That would be good but I am pretty sure no five people will agree on the answers.

I'll give it a whirl

baydog - all bark no bite, except maybe to make the hog stop and bay
catch dog - all bite, no bark...if you have a bark, you don't have a catch dog anymore;)
rough - dog that will catch the hog without the "catch dog there", might not keep the hog caught, but will give it hell trying
bayed - hog is standing still, dogs are baying waiting on the catch dogs to show up
caught - dogs are latched on waiting for your help
roll out - dogs done left the country looking for a hog
