I have a 3 year old 3/4 BMC and 1/4 Pit. I was working some of my puppies in a bay pen and put him in there to see what he would do because he has never seen a hog. He caught the hog on the ear no problem. I took him for a ride yesterday and saw two hogs in the road, turned him loose and he chased the bigger hog off the road, the hog backed up to a tree and he seemed interested at first but when he saw me he came to me and wanted nothing to do with the hog. I walked him closer to the hog and even picked him up and threw him at the hog he didnt do anything. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If your dog doesn't know what a hog is, you can't expect him to just do it. The one hog he has seen was on familiar ground so he had some confidence there. Until he is exposed to enough hogs to figure out that's what "HE" wants to do, be it catch or bay, he's probably not gonna just run one down. There are many variables. Has he been hauled around, been to the woods where he would be comfortable getting through the brush, how well does he know you, how big was the second hog compared to the first hog? All these things affect the confidence of the dog. Without confidence he is just a dog. It's up to you to build that confidence. Dogs are pack animals which means they are like gangsters, tougher in numbers. The more there are the braver they get. If your gonna start taking him to the woods, do it with a dog he knows and that you know is gonna set the example you want him to learn by. Force is never the right way to get a dog to turn on. He has to think it's his idea to do it. When he does what your wanting then make a big deal out of it with praise. Let him know your on his team. Think like a dog, not like a person.

He started out as a pet and I figured I would try him out. Ive had him since he was a puppy, he never seemed gritty at all. The hog in the woods was a little bigger than the one in the pen, not my much at all. Ive talked to some other folks and was told some catch dogs wont catch unless theres other dogs there baying. Maybe just try him in a real situation out of the bay pen.

No sir, if a catch dog sees a hog, it's gonna catch it. Wink

Your dog is 3/4 cur... odds are he's not a catch dog.

cooter , it sounds like your dog is still unsure of what you want from him , my catch dogs will catch any hog big or small bay dogs or not , I think your dog needs more training next to a seasoned cd , get a few hunts under his belt next to the good one , some people are fast to cull , give the dog proper guidence of what you want and let it know its alright to eat pigs up and he will more than likely come together , my bud had a catch dog that at a year old ran into the bay and sniffed the hogs asses , it almost got me in a bind a time or two being he wore the same vest mine did and was his son so they looked alike , we gave this dog a year to learn , he was a house pet from a pup also , he finally started catching and turned out to be a good one but most people would have culled this dog , dogs mature diffrently , some slow , some fast , same as people , you know dumb a$$e$ there everywhere  , well theres those in the dog world also , you just haft to figure out who is and who aint and you will be on your way to having a cd , time and tracks will tell

X2

Plus, He's not a catchdog, or even a hog dog at all yet, you just said the pen hog was tha first he's ever seen. Give him some exposure and enjoy the sport, don't worry about labels yet.

Well I took my yella cur puppies to do some drags with a live hog, which they did great. Really impressed me. Did about 5 different drags and they found the hog and bayed it every time. The reason we quit is becuase when the puppies bayed the hog the last time the above mentioned dog broke his collar and came to me and the puppies, hit the hog real hard and caught with no hesitation. He was chained to the top of my dog box, and the hog was about 120 yards away from the truck in some thick brush. Also my mistake, I checked with the man I got the dog from and he is 1/2 BMC 1/2 RedNose Pit. Im an in Cross City Florida, and if we are close enough I would like to go.

Man one dog or a hundred dogs. if a dog is gonna catch where you can trust him he will do it by himself or with a bay goin. Put the dog on more pigs and youll figure out what kinda dog hell be.
